Chicago’s mayor requests donations for Texas immigrants

Officials in Chicago are requesting contributions and volunteers to assist immigrants being bused to the city from Texas, where the Republican governor is fighting President Biden’s immigration policies.

A busload of approximately 50 immigrants landed in Chicago on Sunday, days after the arrival of a busload of approximately 75 immigrants.

After arriving from Texas on August 31, 2022, a group of migrants board a CTA bus at Chicago’s Union Station to be transferred to a Salvation Army shelter.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot stated that the city had not yet received any communication from Texas officials and requested Texas Governor Greg Abbott to collaborate on a more humanitarian handling of the immigrants.

He has been transporting illegal immigrants from Texas to communities with Democratic mayors as part of an effort to distribute the stream of people crossing into his border state. On Friday, Abbott tweeted the following: “Operation Lone Star continues to battle the perilous border situation created by Biden. We have bused more than 7,600 migrants to Washington, D.C., and more than 1,900 migrants to New York City, and 95 migrants arrived in Chicago on Wednesday.”

“He attempts to ship human beings across the country to an undetermined destination,” Lightfoot said of the Texas governor. It makes no sense to me that he would manufacture a human crisis.

The city of Chicago has established a website for members of the public who wish to volunteer to aid migrants or give supplies such as clothing, books, and diapers, among others.

Lightfoot stated that a number of organizations were already sending aid.

“Because we are a hospitable city, we will always do the right thing to ensure that migrants who come to our city are well accepted.” Lightfoot declared.
