The Powerball jackpot increased to $700 million on Tuesday after nobody guessed all six winning numbers on Monday night, making it the fifth-largest in the game’s 30-year history.
The amount is due to the fact that there has been no winner in 35 consecutive drawings, allowing Wednesday night’s jackpot to quietly grow for nearly three months.
The option for a lump sum payoff, which lottery officials believe is the most popular, is currently $336 million.
Players will also have the option of selecting an annuity, which will be paid out in 29 annual increments. Those who choose cash will see their rewards reduced by about 30 percent.
This payout would have been closer to $413 million just two months earlier, a difference of $77 million.
The astronomical odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million. In contrast, the odds of being struck by lightning are a far more realistic 1 in 15,000
The Powerball jackpot grew to $700 million on Tuesday after nobody matched all six winning numbers on Monday night, making it the game’s second-largest payout ever.
Prior to Monday night’s drawing, the jackpot had reached $637,8 million. The winning numbers were 18-23-35-45-54 and a Powerball of 16. The multiplier was fourfold.
One lucky punter in Texas matched five numbers to win a commendable $1 million; nevertheless, the grand prize has eluded citizens in the 45 states where the lottery is offered.
After it was discovered that nobody had won the jackpot, it was increased to $680 million. However, this increase was short-lived, and within hours it rose to its present level of $700 million.
This number may increase before to Wednesday’s drawing.
Since August 3, no one has matched all six Powerball numbers and won the top prize.
In 2016, three individuals won a $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot. This was the largest jackpot ever won.
Powerball is played in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
