Eskom reports that a maintenance firm contractor working at the Camden power facility was arrested after being “positively linked to a sabotage incident” during investigations.
The offender allegedly removed a bearing oil drain plug, which constantly tripped the oil burner, causing Unit 4 in Camden to trip. In October, the occurrence occurred.
“As a result of exhaustive internal investigations, the perpetrator was identified and questioned about the occurrence. The gathered evidence and the perpetrator’s confession proved that the plug was purposely removed to cause the trip. This act of sabotage will result in his employer receiving extra maintenance and repair positions at the power station,” Eskom warned.
Two truck drivers working for an Eskom-contracted ash hauling company were detained less than a week ago for alleged coal theft at the Kendal power station.
The Eskom Security Team and the South African Police Service (SAPS) are working relentlessly to detect and dismantle criminal networks, Eskom stated. “This arrest, along with the two most recent…, is the consequence of their persistent and good collaboration.”
Advocate Karen Pillay, General Manager for Security at Eskom, stated that the arrest confirms the power company’s allegations that some contractors and staff were purposefully damaging power stations.
“It is upsetting to see that some of our contractors are unethical, have malevolent purpose, and are willing to plunge the nation into additional load shedding at a time when the power infrastructure is already severely restricted.”
We have always assumed that some of our maintenance contractors and workers are responsible for these sabotage operations. We will continue to engage with law enforcement to bring these insiders to justice and ensure that justice is served, but most importantly that those with similar tendencies within Eskom are arrested and removed from the organization,” she said.
Meanwhile, stage three load shedding will be applied from 4pm to 5am, while stage two load shedding will be enforced from 5am to 4pm.
The arrangement of the alternating stages shall continue till further notice.
