A newborn whose complexion became yellow owing to liver issues was likened to “Maggie Simpson” by cruel strangers.
Baby Camiyah, who was born in critical need of a liver transplant, was brought to the hospital after her mother detected blood in her stool at barely three weeks of age.
After doing testing on the infant’s liver, the physicians determined the actual cause.
Camiyah Burton was diagnosed with biliary atresia when she was five weeks old. This condition creates a blockage in the tubes that convey bile from the liver to the gallbladder. Doctors quickly performed surgery on the youngster and felt they had successfully removed the obstruction.
The reprieve, though, was brief.
Seven months after the treatment, the toddler’s health worsened and she began to turn yellow.
“The symptoms were becoming worse. Abbie McClean, the child’s 23-year-old mother, stated that her daughter was becoming more yellow and was hospitalized every other week for an illness.

Seven months later, it was determined that her operation had failed and that her sole chance of survival depended on a liver transplant.
McClean added, “We were warned that if she did not have a transplant, she would not live past the age of two.” It was genuinely terrible, and my mind was filled with several notions.
McClean had to cope with more than her daughter’s physical problems; she also had to deal with a type of social illness. Several others began taunting her and her daughter by referring to the infant as “Maggie Simpson” from the popular television series “The Simpsons.”

“There were a few very terrible individuals who referred to her as ‘a Simpson.’ “She was that yellow,” McClean recalled.
“Most of the remarks were positive, but sometimes someone would say, ‘Oh, is that Maggie Simpson?’”
McClean stated that she was unconcerned by the remarks since she understood the true reason behind her daughter’s yellow hair.
“There were a few very terrible individuals who referred to her as ‘a Simpson.’ “She was that yellow,” McClean recalled.

McClean commented, “The remarks don’t affect me because, one, I find them to be extremely uninformed, and second, I’m so proud of her that nothing of the kind could ever alter how I feel about her accomplishments.”
“That remark does not distress me in the least because she was yellow – she was yellow due to illness, but she was that yellow.”
A year after the unsuccessful operation, the situation reached its breaking point.
McClean stated that the remarks concerning her daughter’s yellow skin did not affect her.

McClean stated, “At 11 months, it progressively worsened to the point that, prior to the transplant, she was practically green in color.” “We received many stares. “Both the whites of her eyes and her skin were very yellow.”
“Camiyah had developed a huge stomach due to the accumulation of fluids caused by liver illness, and the surgeon’s words were ‘we’re going to make that stomach flat today,’” McClean continued. It was very different from the other two calls we had.
According to her mother, Burton ultimately had a liver transplant in December of last year and has been recuperating beautifully despite a few setbacks.
“Her operation went quite well. “Her recuperation following the transplant was not easy – there were a few complications,” McClean added.
She was able to walk, crawl, and do everything she couldn’t do prior to the transplant.
“It’s so great to be able to observe her outside of the hospital,” the author says.
Burton’s skin tone has returned to normal and her liver issues have resolved since the procedure.

According to McClean, the organ originated from a woman who died in a vehicle accident. Camiyah received half of her liver, while the other half was used to save the life of another individual.

“She made me feel more optimistic and that we would get through it,” McClean said. “At that point, it was almost as if we couldn’t change what was happening, but we could control how we responded to it.”
Since the operation, both mother and daughter have become advocates for organ donation.
McClean stated, “If you would accept an organ for yourself or a loved one, you should be willing to donate it when you no longer need it.”
I believe that organ donation is miraculous and that it truly improves lives.
