A city judge determined that three Rikers guards were drinking on the job at the Manhattan Detention Center and consequently fired them.
Administrative Judge Kevin Casey determined that City Correction Officer Sylvester Wilson was caught on surveillance video making trips to a bathroom in the jail known as The Tombs to fill two 7-Eleven coffee cups with coconut-scented liquor, which he then shared with coworkers Koryelle Cameron and Chanel Winfrey.
The three cops were found drinking after the deputy warden of the jail received a complaint from a detective that they had been imbibing on the job.
The judge ruled on Monday that evidence, including video footage and witness interviews, proved the three unsuccessfully attempted to conceal their June 2019 cocktails by discarding the bottle Wilson had been pouring from and lying about what had been in the coffee cup, which later tested positive for alcohol.
Wilson was recommended for termination by Casey for drinking on the job, tampering with evidence, and excessive use of force in a separate incident. In addition, he suggested a 60-day penalty for Cameron and a 50-day ban for Winfrey, citing her impeccable disciplinary history.
DOC Commissioner Louis Molina informed the Post that all three officers were terminated, notwithstanding the judge’s recommendation.
“These police officers breached the city’s trust and their oath to do their duties with honesty. “After reviewing OATH’s recommendation, I determined that the conduct and actions of the other two officers were unsatisfactory, and I terminated them,” Molina stated. As public officials, it is essential that we maintain the public’s trust.
