  • Institute seeks executive order to facilitate shipping

    By Chiazo Ogbolu

The Nigerian Institute of Shipping (NIS) has urged the Federal Government to pronounce an executive order that would facilitate shipping.

Dr Chukwuemeka Enebeli, newly-elected President of NIS, made the call at the institute’s Annual General Meeting and Award ceremony on Thursday in Lagos.

Enebeli said that the executive order would help strengthen the National Shipping Policy.

He added that the order when put in place would address issues surrounding ownership of ships in the country.

According to him, Nigeria is the centre of the maritime world today, even though it is at the lowest ebb, it controls about 65 per cent of the cargoes in the subregion.

“On the issue of Nigeria owning ships, it lies with government policy and we will soon present our reasons to the Nigerian President, minister of transportation,  the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, as well as other relevant agencies as professionals.

“This will guide the policy trust of government viz-a-viz owning of ships.

“We should consider how owning ships will benefit us economically, impact on economy, viz-a-viz the growing population, particularly the action of litoral state, the shipping industries and others.

“We have the Nigerian Maritime Authority Shipping Policy. What we need to do is to enhance it and also move a step further to advise Mr President who has the power to make regulations,” he said.

He noted that when he makes an order, it  gives a clear direction on the way to go, particularly because of the country’s strategic importance in Africa and the world in general.

Enebeli added that the issue of cabotage was very important for the growth and development of the country.

He also said that it would make the country not to rely on foreign shipping nations for assistance.

“Today, we don’t have a very effective cottage dry dock that one can go in and out to bring a ship.

“So, what we really need is a clear policy to that effect and also create some independence around cabotage away from NIMASA,” he said.

Enebeli noted that NIMASA had a lot work at the moment ranging from international shipping trade, ship registration, manning and general regulation of the entire industry.

“The Nigerian government should look deeply if we must enhance our local industry, as this has to do with the welfare and survival of Nigerians,” he said.

On top priorities for the institute, Enebeli said he would focus on four pillars which include enhanced collaboration with stakeholders and addressing paucity of funds, among others.

Capt. Anthony Onoharigho, outgoing president, urged the new executive to make the building of the shipping house top priority to give the council a stand in the country and the world, as a whole.

Prof. Bamidele Badejo, former Dean, Faculty of Social and Management Services, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, noted that the council was experiencing policy summersault.

Badejo stressed the need for policy consistency to enable the shipping industry to thrive in the country.

He also urged government to tackle issues affecting trade in the seaport which he listed as insecurity, banditry and gridlock, among others. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Refineries rehabilitation to expand Nigeria’s crude oil market — NPDC

    By Emmanuella Anokam

The Nigeria Petroleum Development Company Ltd. (NPDC) says the ongoing rehabilitation of NNPC refineries and completion of private refineries like Dangote refinery would shore up Nigeria’s position as a refining and petrochemicals hub.

Mr Ali-Muhammad Zarah, Managing Director, NPDC, said this on Thursday in Abuja, at the ongoing fifth Nigeria Interrnational Energy Summit (NIES 2022) with the theme ‘Revitalising the Industry: Future Fuels and Energy Transition”.

Zara, who spoke at a session, tagged “Upstream Forum” was represented by Mr Adeyinka Adeyemo, Executive Director, Planning and Commercial, NPDC.

“As Energy transition reshapes the crude oil market, a plethora of opportunities opens in refining, petrochemicals and gas based industries.

“The domestic crude oil market will expand,” the NPDC MD said.

Zara said the focus of the upstream forum on “Opportunities and Challenges for Crude Oil Markets in a Time of Transition” was apt in view of global current demand for duality of increased availability of affordable energy and reduction in carbon footprint.

He said the top crude-oil producing countries, of which Nigeria was one, were having to quickly learn how to balance short term economic objectives with the long-term business sustainability of the industry.

He noted that it could be argued that the burden for decarbonisation has been disproportionately laid at the foot of the oil and gas industry, adding that the sentiments may not go away despite the world’s increasing appetite for energy.

According to him, this is reinforced by the OPEC forecast that global oil demand is expected to grow from 96.6 mm b/d barrels per day to 104 mm b/d in 2040.

According to OPEC natural gas will take a more central position in the world’s energy mix, about 25 per cent in the most optimistic energy transition scenario.

“The majority of this new demand will come from developing countries, increasing by almost 24 mb/d, to reach 67 mb/d by 2040.

“But much of the demand will still be from the developed world. This implies that there is no expectation for a peak in oil demand over the forecast period to 2040.

“Global oil consumption will exceed 100mb/d, even much earlier than projected years ago,” he said.

Zara further noted that other sources of fuel will continue to gain share in the energy mix but the oil industry must not shy away from the challenge of building a less carbon intensive world and play a pivotal role towards these goals.

According to him, Nigeria possesses the resources and expertise that could be used in developing more efficient technologies in exploration, production and processing.

He said it could be achieved through ensuring the widespread adoption of carbon capture and sequestration technologies, blue hydrogen and other frontier technologies with huge potentials.

He stated that in Nigeria, the biggest contribution to the energy transition would be in gas development which was more than just a ‘transition fuel’.

This, he said, was identified by Nigerian government through bold steps taken with the ‘Decade of Gas’, Autogas and Gas Flaring Commercialisation Programme and the sanctioning of NLNG Train 7.

These initiatives, he said, were expected to contribute massively to achievement of sustainable economic development while helping Nigeria meet her Nationally Determined Contributions to carbon reduction targets.

“Already Nigeria has witnessed a geometric increase in urea and ammonia production capacity in the last decade, with even more Final Investment Decisions to be taken in the nearest future.

“Refinery capacity might be shrinking in some countries but in the Global South, it will be expanding, altering the flow of crude oil as we have always known it.

“To meet the future challenges around energy transition, we need  dialogues and feedback in a diverse and inclusive fashion while the NPDC will continue to pursue targets set by NNPC Limited on transparency, cost efficiency and corporate social responsibility,” he noted.

Speaking, Dr James Edet, President, Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE), called for more modular refineries for more foreign exchange, especially at huge market in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Edet also appealed for the establishment of Energy Bank to fund projects towards energy transition. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Rainbow kiss: Should you do it or not?

With millions of views and tags on the #rainbowkiss on social media, this is what you need to know about rainbow kiss.

Many relationships have third parties because one of the partners think something the other wants is too gross or irrritating to practise, leaving a loophole in the relationship.

First thing we will recommend is if you ever decide to try it out, involve yourself in a rainbow kiss with a partner you trust, like your wife or engaged partner. Because of its “dirty” nature, you probably shouldn’t practice rainbow kiss with just any body.

Rainbow kiss is also not for homosexuals. Sorry but the whole essence of “rainbow” kiss cannot be achieved with same sex intimacies. You simply can’t mix colors.

A rainbow kiss is a kiss between a female and a male partner while she is menstruating (on her period).

It occurs when a couple gets intimate during the woman’s monthly cycle.

While the term “kiss” immediately suggests the whole drama happens in the mouth, it doesn’t have to be. In order not to get too “out of the ordinary”, which may turn off some partners, it can also happen down below.

This is because the term rainbow indicates a mixture of color, and in this case the woman’s blood and sperm. So don’t think the details you are about to read below must be followed to the letters.

Anyways, usual rainbow kiss occurs while in the 69 position, where the couple performs a blow job.

The couple kisses after the male ejaculates in the woman’s mouth, mingling the menstrual blood with the semen.

You are probably saying eww right now in your mind but like it or not, thats the new trend. People do it.

Many couples stay away during the female partners’ period and that may lead to infidelity.

Rainbow kiss can help keep the connection and save the relationship.

But before you take it as a sole answer to your problems, the sexual act also poses some health risks. Semen and period blood can carry lots of different infectious particles, such as HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis. So like we recommended earlier, if you are unsure of your partner’s STD status, you should not be sharing rainbow kisses.

A medical doctor condemns the practice totally as unsafe for your health.

Some reports suggest that a rainbow kiss is a happy accident that occurs when a woman coincidentally gets her period while her partner is performing cunnilingus.

However, in order to achieve that all-important “rainbow kiss” shade, a little planning goes a long way.

Both partners have to be ready and willing to hold the respective blood and semen in their mouths after performing oral sex, in preparation for that magical kiss.

So in conclusion, we still can’t tell you if you should do it or not. Doctors say don’t. But then, its your life.

  • Firm expands chain to give Nigerians healthy lifestyles

    By Rukayat Moisemhe

i-Fitness, fastest growing fitness chain in West Africa, has expanded footprints to provide Nigerians, particularly those living in urban communities with a healthy lifestyle.

Founder, i-Fitness, Mr Foluso Ogunwale, made this known in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos.

Ogunwale said the company’s decision to open two new outlets in the heart of Lagos was borne out of the desire to ensure easy access to lifestyle facilities.

He noted that the company was established in 2015 to address the alarming rate of death caused by non-communicable diseases.

Ogunwale cited that a 2021 global report from the World Health Organisation (WHO) had estimated death arising from non-communicable diseases globally to be at about 71 per cent.

He said that was a wake-up call that led to the planting of fitness chains across Lagos state.

“We are very excited to build the first fitness chain Nigeria has ever seen start from Lagos with two more locations.

“We are more excited because we have the rare opportunity to create the path in the industry, creating over 400 jobs.

“We currently have the highest engagement of personal trainers in West Africa and this gives us the privilege to assist these vibrant, youthful people with a means of decent livelihood.

“We are excited to be creating jobs and values, we are also excited for our members because we are giving them the enabling environment to live their life,” he said.

Ogunwale disclosed that the target of the company in the next five years was to ensure that fitness chains take root globally.

He added that plans were already in the pipeline to launch a digital fitness that would be accessible to everyone around the world.

Also, Chairman, i-Fitness Board, Mr Michael Ikpoki, said that the company remained committed to supporting Nigerians’ quest for a healthier lifestyle by creating new outlets in several locations, particularly in urban cities such as Lagos and Abuja.

Ikpoki explained that the focus of setting up a new fitness location was to provide opportunities for more Nigerians to access world-class gym facilities.

He added that the company would continue to improve on quality as it rolls out more outlets.

Ikpoki said that the company would continue to play its part in creating jobs and contributing to the Lagos economy through the establishment of outlets.

“For every outlet we open, we try to improve standards or raise the bar in terms of structure, appeal, look, or ambiance.

“Our facilities provide different opportunities for our members to have an improved and healthy lifestyle and we are committed to building a community of health enthusiasts and physical trainers,” he added.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Ukraine expects over 20,000 foreign mercenaries

More than 20,000 foreign mercenaries may soon arrive on the territory of Ukraine in the near future. According to unconfirmed reports, thousands of foreign mercenaries from private military companies have already arrived in Ukraine.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, another 16,000 foreign mercenaries are to enter the territory of the country. This indicates direct intervention in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

“Ukraine already welcomes foreign volunteers, first 16,000 are coming to the country. They are coming to defend our freedom,” Zelensky said.

Zelensky’s statement could be provocative in nature, though.

A number of European leaders said that they would not mind their citizens traveling to Ukraine to fight and show resistance to the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

Zelensky signed a decree ensuring visa-free entry to Ukraine to all foreign nationals, who want, at their own will, to join the international legion of the territorial defence of Ukraine.

  • BREAKING: Russian army captures Ukraine’s largest army base, announces $500,000 bounty on Ukrainian nationalist commanders

Chechen special forces under the leadership of commander Hussein Mezhidov have captured Ukraine’s largest army base, Ramzan Kadyrov, the President of Chechnya, said in his Telegram channel.

“Chechen special forces under the leadership of commander Hussein Mezhidov continue to succeed in offensive operations against Bandera supporters. As soon as they see our fighters coming, whole regiments of Nazis take to their heels, if they have time, of course,” Kadyrov said.

Mezhidov reported the defeat of the nationalist battalion and the capture of the largest army base in Ukraine, Kadyrov said.

“There was a huge amount of weapons and ammunition, as well as modern armored vehicles found on the territory of the base: seven tanks, 12 armored personnel carriers, TIGERS, artillery installations. These are the trophies that went to the Russian fighters,” Kadyrov said.

Earlier it was reported that Kadyrov announced a $500,000 reward for the heads of Ukrainian nationalist commanders.

  • Round 2 of Russia-Ukraine Talks: Delegates Shake Hands, Smile At Each Other – See Video

The second round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine on the cessation of hostilities started in Belarus, RIA Novosti reports with reference to the Belarusian Foreign Ministry.

“As soon as the members of the Ukrainian delegation walked in, one of the members of the Russian delegation suggested shaking hands. The Ukrainian officials responded positively, and every one shook hands and smiled at each other before sitting down for the talks.”

Attempts to drag out the negotiation process between Russia and Ukraine will result in Moscow’s new requirements to Kiev, Russian President Putin said.

“It was emphasized that the tasks of the special military operation would be fulfilled in any case, and attempts to buy time by dragging out the negotiations would only cause additional requirements to Kiev to appear in our negotiating position,” Putin said after a conversation with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron.

After the conversation with the Russian President, Emmanuel Macron said that Putin gave him to understand that he would take all of Ukraine under control if the Ukrainians reject Moscow’s current conditions.

Earlier, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced his readiness for negotiations with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

“The world already understands that one needs to make the President of the Russian Federation sit at the negotiating table as long as they are ready to sit down at the negotiating table with him, and so am I,” Zelensky said.

Kyiv’s condition for negotiations with Moscow is a ceasefire on the territory of Ukraine.

The first round of the talks between Russia and Ukraine took place on February 28 in Belarus.
