  • “Putin is playing Biden like a drum”, “Putin is smart” – US Former President Donald Trump

“The problem is not that he’s smart — which of course he’s smart — but the real problem is that our leaders are dumb. Putin is playing Biden like a drum… It’s not a pretty thing to watch,” Trump said.

“It would have been so easy for me to stop this travesty from happening. He understood me, and he understood that I don’t play games.”

“Russia’s attack on Ukraine is appalling. It’s an outrage, and an atrocity that should never have been allowed to occur. We are praying for the proud people of Ukraine. God bless them all.”

Trump appeared on stage at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Florida, where he revved up his base ahead of November’s midterm elections, hinted again at another presidential run and blamed Joe Biden for the Ukraine crisis.

In a press conference with right-wing cable shortly before his address, Trump went even further, saying: “thousand of people, hundreds of thousands of people could die… and this could spread to other countries, and it could spread throughout the world. This could be a world war. Something has to be done.”

  • “Check your tickets” as search is on for Powerball lottery winner of $63million

    The winning numbers in draw 1345 were 6, 15, 9, 27, 32, 28 and 33, and the Powerball was 8.

Officials are urging any resident or visitor who bought their ticket from a NSW Lotteries outlet in Coffs Harbour to check their entry, noting it was not registered to a player card so they have no way of contacting the winner.

“Someone could be in store for a life-changing Friday, but first they need to check their ticket and discover they’re now more than $60 million richer,” The Lott spokeswoman Ally Ramsamy said.

“Previous winners have kept their winning lottery tickets in their wallet, handbag, on the fridge door or in the car glove box.”

The draw was the second-biggest jackpot in history, after a $150 million draw held in September 2019 which had three division one winners.

If you are going to buy tickets and try lottery, at least also try to check your tickets. You might just be the next lucky winner.

  • Beijing Winter Olympics is the first Games in history to be carbon neutral

The Beijing Winter Olympics which closed Sunday became the first Games in history to be carbon neutral; this is an unlikely achievement that could not have happened without China’s greening transformation over the past decade.

Previous Winter Olympics have claimed to be carbon neutral, but China is considering a much broader range of emissions, an article on Nature’s website quoted the International Olympics Committee as saying. It notes that China has been investing heavily in renewable energy as part of its overall goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.

Amid a great deal of green efforts is the eye-catching renovation of used Olympic venues. The ‘Ice Cube,’ a premier curling venue, for instance, was retrofitted from the iconic ‘Water Cube’, swimming and diving venue of Beijing 2008, and at the Shougang competition zone, world-class facilities were repurposed from a disused steel plant.

These new landmarks not only offered audiences captivating sights but also attested to the sweeping changes in China’s economic landscape toward greater sustainability under the guidance of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s economic thought.

    AN OVERALL TRANSFORMATION

Back in 2012, the country began to face dual pressure from both the slowing growth in the aftermath of the international financial crisis and environmental woes caused by years of extensive development.

That year, China’s aggregate gross domestic product (GDP) accounted for 11.5 percent of the world’s total, but its energy consumption per unit of GDP, or energy intensity, was 2.5 times that of the world’s average level.

“We owe so much to the ecological environment. If we don’t do solid green work from now on, we will pay a higher price in the future,” Xi said in December 2012, during his first inspection trip out of Beijing as general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

Since then, China has ramped up its efforts on an unprecedented scale to advance the greening transition of the economy as Xi’s hallmark green development phrase “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets” become a maxim in the country.

Taking energy mix, for instance, the world’s second-largest economy began to be less reliant on coal and other fossil energies causing high emissions, while increasing the proportion of clean energies.

In 2021, energy intensity dropped by 2.7 percent from the previous year, official data has shown. The progress came as the indicator declined by 28.7 percent from 2011 to 2020.

The proportion of coal in China’s total energy consumption was reduced from 69.2 percent to 56.7 percent during the 2010-2020 period.

In 2021, the share of coal consumption further dropped by 0.8 percentage points year on year, while that of clean energies including natural gas, hydropower, nuclear power, wind power, and solar energy climbed 1 percentage point.

“Protecting the environment is protecting productivity, and improving the environment is boosting productivity,” Xi said during an inspection trip to south China’s Hainan Province in April 2013.

Along with the transformation of energy structure, China has also steadfastly prompted its upgrade of industrial structure, with the service sector and low-carbon industries growing rapidly.

Accounting for 53.3 percent of China’s total GDP last year, the service sector’s contribution rate to economic growth reached 54.9 percent, 16.5 percentage points higher than the second industry.

For the primary industry itself, carbon emissions have continued to decline. It is estimated that from 2015 to 2020 carbon dioxide emissions per unit of added value of Chinese industries fell by about 22 percent, according to a white paper on China’s response to climate change.

    CAMPAIGN FOR BETTER ENVIRONMENT

The last 10 years have also witnessed China’s unprecedented moves on improving the environment, from controlling air, water and soil pollution to conserving existing green ecosystems as well as adding new forests, grasslands and wetlands.

“We should protect the environment like we protect our eyes, and treat the environment like we treat our lives,” Xi said when joining a deliberation with lawmakers from east China’s Jiangxi Province at the annual meeting of the National People’s Congress in 2015.

Last year, the share of days with good air quality rose to 87.5 percent, up 0.5 percentage points from 2020. The progress was built on marked improvements during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020), which increased by 5.8 percentage points to 87 percent.

Good air days came along with the fast growth of green areas. Earlier data from NASA satellites showed that China alone accounts for 25 percent of the global net increase in leaf area during 2000-2017.

Joining Beijing citizens to plant trees in April last year, Xi urged greater efforts to increase the country’s forest areas, enhance the quality of forests and boost the carbon sink capacity of ecosystems. Since 2013, Xi has joined Beijing citizens in tree-planting activities for nine consecutive years.

Data from the white paper on responding to climate change showed that from 2016 to 2020, China had planted around 36.3 million hectares of forests and added 202,600 hectares of new wetlands.

Aiming for a greener and more sustainable future, China has revved up its policy support to achieve the goals of carbon peaking before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060, which Xi put forward in 2020 at the General Debate of the 75th Session of the UN General Assembly.

Within less than two years, a set of policy arrangements have been unveiled in this respect, involving both top-level designs and institutional innovations.

In late October last year, central authorities issued a guiding document on achieving the carbon goals, laying out key specific targets and measures for the coming decades. By 2030, China’s carbon emissions will peak, stabilize and then decline, and by 2060, China will be carbon neutral and have fully established a green, low-carbon and circular economy, it says.

Going forward, challenges will remain. But in Xi’s opinion, there is no turning back.

“Meeting these [carbon peaking and neutrality] targets will require tremendous hard work from China. Yet we believe that when the interests of the entire humanity are at stake, China must step forward, take action, and get the job done”, Xi said when addressing the World Economic Forum Virtual Event of the Davos Agenda in 2021.

  • Russia says Ukraine refuses to talk, Ukraine says conditions are unacceptable

The Kremlin said Saturday that Kiev has refused to hold talks with Moscow, causing Russian forces to resume operations in Ukraine.

“The Ukrainian side has refused to negotiate. This afternoon Russian forces have resumed their advance in accordance with the plan of the operation,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday ordered a halt to military operations in light of the expected negotiations that were previously planned with Ukraine, local media reported citing Peskov.

Putin on Thursday authorized “a special military operation” in Donbass, and Ukraine confirmed that military targets across the country were under attack.

Also on Saturday, Oleksiy Arestovich, advisor to the head of Ukraine’s presidential office, said Kiev refused to negotiate with Russia because the conditions Russia proposed are “unacceptable” for the country, calling those conditions as “an attempt to force us to surrender.”

  • Phone Conversation between Chinese and Russian presidents

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, on Friday held a phone conversation.

During the phone conversation, Xi thanked Putin again for coming to China to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics, and congratulated the Russian athletes on finishing second in the Winter Olympics medal table.

Putin extended warm congratulations to all the Chinese people for the complete success of the Beijing Winter Olympics and for the outstanding performance of the Chinese delegation.

The two sides mainly exchanged views on the current Ukrainian situation.

Putin introduced the historical context of the Ukraine issue as well as Russia’s special military operation in eastern Ukraine and its position.

He said that the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization have long ignored Russia’s legitimate security concerns, repeatedly broken their commitments and continuously pushed their military deployment eastwards, which challenged Russia’s strategic bottom line.

Russia is ready to hold high-level negotiation with Ukraine, said Putin.

Xi pointed out that recent dramatic changes in the situation in eastern Ukraine have drawn great attention from the international community, adding that China decides on its position based on the merits of the Ukrainian issue itself.

He called on dropping the Cold War mentality, attaching importance and respecting the legitimate security concerns of various countries and forming a balanced, effective and sustainable European security mechanism through negotiation.

The Chinese side supports the Russian side in solving the issue through negotiation with the Ukrainian side, Xi said, adding that China has been consistent in its basic position on respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries and abiding by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

China is ready to work with members of the international community to embrace the concept of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, and firmly uphold the international system with the United Nations at its core and the international order based on international law, Xi said.

  • Chinese Foreign Minister explains China’s basic position on Ukraine issue

Wang Yi, China’s State Councilor and Foreign Minister, expanded on China’s basic perspective on the Ukraine problem on Friday.

Wang also had an in-depth exchange of views on the situation in Ukraine during his phone talks with British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell as well as Emmanuel Bonne, diplomatic counselor to French President Emmanuel Macron, respectively.

On China’s basic position on the Ukraine issue, Wang stressed the following five points.

Firstly, China stands for respecting and safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries and earnestly abiding by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. China’s position is consistent and clear, and it also applies to the Ukraine issue.

Secondly, China advocates the concept of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, he said.

China believes that a country’s security cannot come at the expense of harming others’ security, and regional security cannot be guaranteed by reinforcing and even expanding military blocs. And all countries’ reasonable security concerns should be respected. The Cold War mentality should be completely abandoned.

Following the five consecutive rounds of eastward expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Russia’s legitimate demands on security should be taken seriously and solved in a proper way, Wang added.

Thirdly, China has been following the evolution of the Ukraine issue, and the present situation is something China does not want to see.

It is absolutely imperative that all parties exercise necessary restraint in order to prevent the situation in Ukraine from deteriorating or even getting out of control. The safety of ordinary people’s lives and properties should be effectively safeguarded, and in particular, large-scale humanitarian crises have to be prevented.

Fourthly, the Chinese side supports and encourages all diplomatic efforts conducive to the peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis. And China welcomes direct talks and negotiations between Russia and Ukraine as soon as possible.

The Ukraine issue has evolved in a complex historical context. Ukraine should be a bridge of communication between the East and the West, instead of the frontline of confrontations between major countries.

China also supports Europe and Russia in their efforts to hold dialogue on an equal footing over the European security issue, uphold the notion of indivisible security, and eventually form a balanced, effective and sustainable European security mechanism.

Fifthly, China believes that the UN Security Council should play a constructive role in resolving the Ukraine issue and that regional peace and stability as well as the security of all countries should be put first.

Actions taken by the Security Council should reduce the tension rather than add fuel to the flames, and should help advance the settlement of the issue through diplomatic means rather than further escalating the situation.

China is always opposed to wilfully citing the Chapter VII in Security Council resolutions to authorize the use of force and sanctions.

Wang said that China, as a permanent member of the Security Council as well as a responsible major country, has always been faithfully fulfilling its international obligations and playing a constructive role in safeguarding world peace and stability.

When it comes to the peace and security issue, China is a major country with the best record, Wang said, adding that China has never invaded other countries, launched proxy wars, sought spheres of influence or engaged in any military bloc confrontation.

China adheres to the path of peace and development, and is committed to building a community with a shared future for mankind, Wang said.

China will continue to firmly reject all hegemonies and strong powers, and firmly safeguard the legitimate and legal rights and interests of developing countries, especially small and medium-sized countries, he added.

  • Masjid1001 initiative promotes Islam, supporting community mosques in Nigeria

    By Kadiri Abdulrahman

An NGO, “Masjid1001 Initiative” says it was committed to providing safe and befitting community mosques and prayer centres across the country, according to a statement by Dr Musa Rabiu, Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT) of the initiative, on Saturday.

Rabiu stated that no fewer than one million Nigerians had benefited from Masjid 1001’s support to community mosques across the country, through developmental interventions in Kaduna, Osun, Rivers, Kwara, Sokoto, Kogi and Edo states.

He said that the initiative was set up in 2017 by a group of respected Muslim professionals, who volunteered their expertise in the renovation and refurbishment of community mosques towards providing befitting prayer centres for Muslims.

It recently completed renovation works of roofing, tilling, construction of prayers and ablution areas in selected mosques, he added.

“In the same light, the initiative was commencing the roofing of the Kogi state University mosque, Ayingba,  as well as drilling of borehole and prayer section tilling of Mama Mamayi mosque at Iyekhei village, Auchi, Edo State,” he said.

According to Rabiu, the initiative, through its Mosque Selection Committee, reviewed all publicly nominated prayer centres across the six geopolitical zones of the country based on pre-defined criteria.

” These criteria included mandatory support to only community-owned mosques, assessment and confirmation of infrastructural needs, as well as costs in view of the limited availability of funds,” he explained.

The Chairman confirmed that the selected projects were funded through donations by members and the public.

He acknowledged the commitment and support of members of Masjid 1001 Initiative to the various projects, while soliciting further support of the public to the initiative, through donations, volunteering and mosques’ nominations.

Also, Engineer Ali Goni, the Chairman, Project Implementation Committee, reiterated Masjid 1001’s commitment to supporting community mosques.

“The initiative successfully completed its intervention at Al-Adabiyyah Mosque in Lugbe, Abuja, with roofing and tiling of the prayer and ablution areas, whilst the expansive praying area was tiled at FGGC Ipetumodu, Osun State.

“At Kagoro Mosque, Samaru, Zaria, in Kaduna state, the entire roof was replaced and the women’s prayer area was tilled whilst the entire internal floor of Eneka Central Mosque in Port Harcourt was also tiled.

” Kwami Central Mosque in Gombe and Ganiki Sango Mosque in Ilorin also had their roofs installed,” he said.

Meanwhile, the BOT Secretary, Mrs Olasinmibo Zubair, confirmed that the initiative had commenced automating some critical activities, especially the identification and selection of mosques.

Zubair said that members were proud of the work done so far by all volunteers and contributors.

“We recognise that there was so much more to be done, hence our call for expertise and donations to support the initiative as a part of our Islamic obligations.” she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Masjid1001 is a non-governmental, not-for-profit group, aimed at providing befitting and convenient prayer centres for Nigerian Muslims. (NAN)
