Nigeria has been named as the official host of the 2022 World Toilet Summit, slated for November 2022.
Mr Jack Sim, Founder of the World Toilet Organisation (WTO), made this announcement at a virtual meeting of Water Sanitation and Hygiene Stakeholders and Development Partners on Wednesday.
According to Sim, the United Nations member countries in 2013, unanimously adopted November 19, as the day to create awareness on access to toilets.
He said the summit would be a great opportunity for its members to come to Nigeria, to seek out ways to address its sanitation challenges.
He noted that Nigeria’s selection was an opportunity to showcase the extensive efforts of the Federal Government of Nigeria and also to drive the intended change.
Also speaking during the Zoom meeting, Mrs Caterina De Albuquerque, Chief Executive Officer, Sanitation and Water for All (SWA), pointed out that sanitation was at one time not discussed and almost forgotten globally.
She applauded the leadership of Nigeria, for prioritising Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, stressing that Nigeria’s example would inspire other African Countries to follow suit.

Dr Nicholas Igwe, National Coordinator, Organised Private Sector in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (OPSWASH), said that the choice of Nigeria for the summit was a clear endorsement of the commitment and political will of the Federal Government towards Water, Sanitation and Hygiene delivery in Nigeria.
He highlighted that the private sector had a critical role to play in driving the sanitation economy while also facilitating job creation.
He said SWA’s three key objectives included; building and sustaining political will, championing multi-stakeholder collaboration and facilitating strategies to attract new investments.
In his remarks, the Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu, noted that the selection of Nigeria as the host country for 2022 World Toilet Summit was a welcome development.
He stressed that the choice of Nigeria to host the Summit was coming at a period when Nigeria had made concrete plans to exit from the comity of nations practising open defecation.
The Minister recalled that the ‘Open defecation free’ (ODF) Campaign was launched in November 2019, and was aimed at mobilising high level political support, resources and the entire populace towards building a new culture of safe sanitation.
He acknowledged that Nigeria needs all necessary support to ensure that the ODF Campaign gains traction with all stakeholders playing their part.
“I am optimism that the World Toilet Summit will provide a veritable platform for the mobilisation of Private Sector and other critical stakeholders in addressing the challenge of Open Defecation in the country’’.
He expressed agreement with Catarina De Albuquerque, SWA CEO’s opinion, that high level participation was key as regards rallying international delegates and stakeholders for the campaign.
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Water Resources (FMWR), Mrs Didi Walson-Jack, acknowledged and thanked all the stakeholders and Development partners present at the meeting.
She advised that joint commitment towards achieving the World Toilet Summit would take Nigeria to the next level.
The private sector, Development Partners and Stakeholders all commended the initiative and pledged their support to host a successful summit.
Private Sector and Development partners present at the meeting were, the World Bank, UNICEF. Reckitt, Coca-Cola, Tolaram Group, FMDQ and Guinness Nigeria.
The World Toilet Organization is a global non-profit organization committed to improving toilet and sanitation conditions worldwide. It was founded in 2001 with 15 members and has now grown to 151 member organizations in 53 countries. (NAN)

The Lagos State House of Assembly has assured the Etegbin community in Oto-Awori Council Development Area of the state of quick intervention over the alleged land grabbing by suspected hoodlums.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that hundreds of protesters had staged a peaceful march to the Lagos Assembly on Tuesday, to protest the invasion and destruction of their properties by land grabbers.
The protesters carried different placards with inscriptions such as “Etegbin community has been displaced by land grabbers”, “Hon. Surajudeen Tijani, land grabbers are terrorising your constituency”, “Lagos State, please stop the land grabbers from intimidation” and “the means of livelihood has been destroyed by land grabbers”.
Addressing the protesters, the Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, commended them for conducting themselves in a peaceful manner.
The speaker also assured them that their case would not be swept under the carpet, adding that the House would give the issue expedite intervention no matter how highly placed the perpetrators were.
Obasa, represented by Bisi Yusuff (Alimosho Constituency 1), said that the House Committee on Public Petition would look at their plight before it would be considered on the floor of the House.
“I am happy that you know the right way to follow and you know that there is government that can fight for you and you didn’t put the laws into your hands.
“All the letters and placards that you brought here would be collected and handed over to the committee on Public Petition for further investigation.
“We will have to call the people that you have mentioned in your petition that are causing mayhem in the community on why they are doing so.
“We shall also invite the community as well before we get to the root of this matter then we can be able to make our submission on it,” he said.
The Speaker also urged the protesters to go home peacefully without taking laws into their hands.
Earlier, the Leader of the protest, Mr Bolaji Aiyepe, said the atrocities were allegedly carried out by one Ewenla Morufu, also known as Kaka.
Aiyepe, also alleged that Morufu (Kaka) was hired by one Alhaji Muraino Azeez who claimed that the whole land of the community in Oto Awori belonged to his family.
He further alleged that when the last invasion that was carried out some residents lost their lives and properties were destroyed.
“During the invasion, some of our people sustained serious injuries while others that were arrested were taken to Zone 2, Kirikiri and up till now they have not been released.
“This is why we are calling on the Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the state and the Lagos Speaker to come to our aid,” he said.
He said that government should provide adequate security personnel in the Riverine community to avoid further invasion of their community.
NAN reports that Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu had sent a high-powered delegation led by the Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Dr Wale Hammed, for an on the spot assessment of the situation.
Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, Chairman, Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who was part of the delegation, said Gov. Sanwo-Olu, had intervened to prevent a breakdown of law and order in the riverine community.
Ojelabi said the governor might invite both parties to resolve the matter amicably so that peace could reign in the community and appealed to the residents to maintain law and order in Etegbin. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has called for the restoration gratuities for public service retirees, saying it will provide immediate succour for them, pending the release of their pension.
The NLC said this on Tuesday in Abuja at a public hearing on two bills on the Pension Reform Act organised by the House of Representatives Committee on Pension.
Mr Uche Ekwe, Head, International Relation, NLC while presenting the union’s position on the two bills, said exempting some agencies from the contributory pension scheme would be unfair to those agencies that would remain.
According to him, the restoration of gratuity payment in public service is the only solution to the problems bedeviling the payment of of pension to retirees in Nigeria.
Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of administration, Sanusi Lemu, who represented the Inspector General of Police, said that the dream for an improved pension for the police has remained a mirage.
This according to him was in view of the problems being experienced by retired police officers.
He stated that the planned exit of the police from the contributory pension scheme was base on its negative impact on the morale of their personnel.
Mrs A’isha Dahiru, the Director General, Nigeria Pension Commission, faulted the call for the removal of the police from contributory pension scheme.
The DG stated that the poor pension being received by police personnel was as a result of their poor salary.
Mr Mahmud Ayinla, Founder, Contributory Pension and Happy Retirement Advocacy (COPEHRA), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), harped on the need for contributory pension.
“The devastating past story of the country’s pension industry cannot be compared with the ease, consistency and sustainability of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS),” he said.
He added that the former DBS was riddled with fraud, corruption and lack of transparency as government continually budgeted money without corresponding reduction in pension liabilities.
“The CPS has provided a platform to track contributions and savings via monthly, quarterly and yearly statements to the contributors and pensioners while the regulator (PenCom) carryout regular regulatory and compliance functions.”
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, represented by Deputy House Leader, Peter Akpatason, said that the two bills would effect the needed intervention.
He said that critical intervention of the legislature in the pension reform bill would better the lives of retirees.
Rep. Kabiru Alhassan, Chairman, House Committee on Pension, explained that the inputs of the stakeholders would guide the house in improving the living conditions of senior citizens in the country.
He stated that the parliament would not feign ignorance of the stress and delay retirees experienced before access their benefits after serving the nation for years.
The first bill was a bill for an act to amend the pension reform act by providing that a pensioner shall receive at least 75 per cent of his retirement savings.
The second is a Bill for an Act to amend the pension reform Act 2014 to provide for exemption of the Nigeria Police Force from the contributory pension scheme and related matters.(NAN)
