    By Jacinta Nwachukwu

The Federal Government has inaugurated a Multi-Sectoral Crises Recovery Project (MCRP), under the North East Development Commission (NEDC), seeking additional funding for continued support to Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.

This is contained in a statement on Tuesday, in Abuja by Nneka Anibeze, Special Assistant, Media to the Minister, Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouq.

Anibeze quoted Umar-Farouq as saying that the project was aimed toward the rehabilitation and provision of infrastructure and livelihood opportunities in the region.

“The Project under the North East Development Commission seeks additional funding for the continued support to the BAY states (Borno, Adamawa and Yobe) by providing humanitarian and long term economic recovery.”

While inaugurating the project, the minister expressed delight in results so far achieved by the MCRP and commended the project teams for the hard work demonstrated since the inception of the project.

She further said that the ministry would continue to encourage the project team to do more, adding that the ministry had made significant gains in the process of the recovery and development of the region.

While noting that a lot were yet to be done, she said that this was reflected in the new targets for beneficiary numbers in the additional financing phase of the project.

She said that this also included the decision taken by the government of Nigeria and the World Bank in extending the funding and duration of the project.

“The additional financing of the Multi Sectoral Crisis Recovery Project presents another opportunity for us to further solidify the progress that we have made.

“And, do more to ensure that citizens in need across the three participating states can recover their livelihoods, have access to quality health care, education, water, sanitation, hygiene and improved engagement with elected officials,” she said.

The minister also said that the project aimed to facilitate improved performance not only by building back better infrastructure but ensuring that the quality of services provided is raised.

She said: “With the increase in scope of the additional financing phase, as earlier presented, the emphasis on improving the agricultural value chain plays a prominent part of the strategy to move the region further along the path of sustainable development.

“We intend as government to provide the enabling environment for the people to take advantage of the large amount of fertile land available not just to feed themselves but neighbouring states across the country.

“Nigeria’s inclusion in the Regional Project for the Lake Chad Basin Countries, joining our neighbours; Cameroun, Niger and Chad, reflects the importance of information sharing, regular dialogue as the problems of climate change, unemployment and to varying degrees conflict fragility transcend our borders.”

According to her, solutions jointly developed have a greater chance for the long-lasting impact for our individual countries but for the Lake Chad region.

“We will work hand in hand with our counterparts in the three countries to find long lasting solutions to our collective challenges,” she said.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • NCDC develops tool on epidemiology, disease reporting

    By Abiemwense Moru

Dr Chinwe Ochu, the Director, Prevention Programmes and Knowledge Management, Head of Research, NCDC, spoke on Tuesday in Lagos, on the sideline of Media Preparedness Against Future and Current Outbreak Response Programme Brainstorming session.
Ochu explained that with the training, journalists and editors would be able to investigate information and know how to report scientifically diseases of public health importance.
“We are working together and going through questionnaires, addressing questions and  getting the  inputs of the media.
“This will enable us to know if the training we are planning to offer truly address the priority of the media,” she said.
On her part, Dr Olayinka Umar-Farouk, Deputy Project Director, Risk Communication, Breakthrough ACTION – Nigeria, said journalists had always been part of the response of outbreaks.
She maintained that journalists needed to be recognised as first respondents.
“So, USAID Breakthrough ACTION – Nigeria, African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) and NCDC have come up with a training programme to see how to integrate journalists into a public health response.
“That is what the workshop is all about; to be better prepared and contribute our international health regulations mandatory capacity for different stakeholders within the population,” she said.
Also, Dr Aishat Usman, Field Coordinator, Nigerian Field and Laboratory Training Programme (AFENET), said it had worked with Ministry of Health, Agriculture and Environment, to strengthen public health network force in Africa.
According to her, to have a safe public health space, collaboration  is needed and one of the ways to  disseminate health information is through the media.
“Coming up with this idea with NCDC to actively build the capacity of journalists and editors of health reporting is a good one.
“This is because we need that collaboration to pass across correct and accurate information to the public,” she said. (NAN)

  • Moroccans Protest against High Prices.

On Sunday, protests erupted in numerous Moroccan cities as people rallied against rising costs and to mark the eleventh anniversary of anti-reform demonstrations.

Hundreds of protestors lamented the exorbitant cost of basic products in Rabat, shouting chants reminiscent of the “February 20 Movement,” according to an AFP correspondent.

The pro-reform and anti-corruption movement was born out of the Arab Spring uprisings that rocked the Middle East in 2011.

Dozens also rallied in Casablanca and Tangiers, according to videos posted on social media.

Drought has hurt the country’s economy and Moroccans are also feeling the pinch from high fuel prices.

Speaking during the arrival of the girls on Sunday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja, the NAPTIP Director General, Dr Fatima Waziri-Azi, stated that the return of the girls was achieved through collaborative effort.

Represented by Mrs Angela Agbayekhai, Head, Intelligent and International Corporation Unit, NAPTIP, the director-general said the process started through the information the agency got from NACTAL, an NGO working in partnership.

“You will agree with me that it is not just Mali that these children of ours have been, but we are happy today that we have been able to bring back these number of girls.

“It is our hope and plan that we will bring back more of these children, because we have so many of them still out there in Mali.

“Today we have 15 of them with a child of three years, a male child. A fact-finding team who went to Mali in 2017 estimated that there are about 20,000 Nigerians still trafficked there.

“These ones brought back today is a drop in the Ocean of the numbers of these Nigerians. This is a good start, NAPTIP D-G will work with the ministers concern to bring back as many as possible.

“Bringing them back was not difficult, we had on ground an NGO we work with based in Mali, we gathered information, share intelligence and it was easy to put them together,” Waziri-Azi said.

Abubakar said that there is no country in the region that have a formidable platform in terms of child protection mechanism like Nigeria.

He said that the partnership with ECOWAS countries on child protection mechanism led to the formation of West Africa Coalition Against Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants (WACTISOM).

“It is this initiative of WACTISOM that led to the identification of these young Nigerian girls; our partners in Mali have written to us about these 15 girls in their custody who are victims of trafficking.

“They have all escaped from their traffickers and want to return back home and we immediately contacted NAPTIP and A-TIPSOM. Mali is a major transit country for trafficking in persons,” he said.

  • 2023: Yahaya Bello can fix Nigeria  —Kogi Commissioner

The Kogi Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr Wemi Jones, says Gov. Yahaya Bello is a futuristic leader with the capacity to bring the needed transformational development to Nigeria.

Jones stated this at the ”1st Chief Lecturer Inaugural Lecture Series” of Kogi State College of Education, Ankpa.

The theme of the event is: ”Global Economic Politics: An Anatomy of China’s Engagement in Nigeria (1971-2021).”

The commissioner congratulated the Chief Lecturer, Dr Ali Maji, for delivering a comprehensive lecture extracted from his decades of research on China’s engagement in Nigeria.

Jones aligned himself with the content of the lecture saying the problem facing Nigeria was her inability to produce a futuristic leader like Bello since independence.

According to him, looking at the country’s trajectory from independence till now, the same set of people have been managing Nigeria’s economy.

He stressed that there was a direct relationship between where Nigeria was before and where it is today.

The commissioner, therefore, appealed to all and sundry to ensure that there was a total break from the past.

”What we lack in this country is futuristic leadership, and it is already in somebody that is about to offer himself to fill the gap.

’’It is a popular thing that we have a leader that is going to deliver this country, he is Alhaji Yahaya Bello,” he said.

Jones noted that Bello was the best candidate to reinvent Nigeria, adding that he was a young, energetic man who could strategise towards the most responsible and best possible future outcomes for Nigeria.

He commended the governor for his tremendous achievements in all aspects of the economy, particularly in the education sector.

Earlier, Maji said that the lecture was aimed at unveiling available statistics that would enable emerging young critical thinkers, scholars and tomorrow’s leaders to know the Chinese strategies for melting the economy of Nigeria as a pathway to colonising it.

The chief lecturer explained that between 1971 and 2021, China had  virtually taken over every aspect of Nigeria’s economy using concessional loans and investments to the detriment of Nigerians.

He added that as of today, over 920 Chinese business holdings were in Nigeria mainly in lucrative sectors, such as oil and gas, telecommunications, and technologies, among others.

Maji said that there was the need for every patriotic Nigerian to be concerned about reversing the present trend before Nigeria would lose her sovereignty.

He, therefore, urged government to make conscious efforts to take the country back to the old days of domestic innovations through Public Private Partnership (PPP) to assist local investors.

He further advised government to desist from  taking additional loans from China.

He noted that of over 64 countries that lost Chinese concession loan, 20 had gone distressed while eight were about to lose their sovereignty. (NAN)
