The Acting Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Mr Matthew Pwajok, said the outbreak of COVID-19 necessitated the idea of contingency planning in the agency.

Pwajok made the disclosure while speaking at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum on Sunday in Abuja.

He said that during the outbreak, the aviation industry was hard hit and that NAMA was not an exception as it suffered a major revenue challenge being a self-funding agency.

“So if there is anything we learnt to do, it is building of contingency, back-up or recovery system or business continuity plan, where we will be able to sustain services no matter what happens.

“We had a few of these instances where we had to provide or relocate the provision of services to a place like that.

“We also learned the need to build contingency funds, we are a government agency and you know TSA, all payments are in one account and it becomes difficult.

”Unlike when you have commercial banking, you can create an account where you can have dedicated funds in case of emergencies.

“In this case, we have learned the need to be able to build a funding system, where in the event of a situation like this that will affect revenue; we will be able to have something to fall back on.

“So very critical is the need to be able to build resilience both financially and in terms of equipment, in terms of personnel,’’ he said.

Pwajok said there were instances where an entire watch of air traffic controllers had to be isolated because one person was infected and the whole lot of them had to be isolated and later tested before they were re-integrated.

The NAMA boss said that in that instance, the agency had to seek additional manpower to provide and sustain services.

“So over time, we have learned the need for back-up, the need for resilience, the need for contingency planning in both financial aspect, in both materials, equipment and personnel aspect.’’

He explained that during the COVID-19 outbreak, airports had to be totally shutdown, services were basically restricted to essential flights; security flight, medical or cargo flights and other kinds of special flights such as diplomatic flights.

The NAMA boss said: “Because of the air navigation services and air traffic services that NAMA provides, there was no time that the air space was closed.

“This is because continuously we had a couple of special flights that were either going to evacuate people or ambulance flights coming to convey sick people or diplomatic flights or other flights that were over-flying the Nigerian air space.

“So, in NAMA, you can never totally shutdown because we owe an obligation to the international community to open our air space for other airlines or other citizens from other countries that will need to over-fly our airspace to other countries.

“So, we continuously provide services even if there was a shutdown and we have learned the need for building resilience.’’

Pwajok said that during the period, some NAMA staff contracted coronavirus and in line with protocols, facilities had to be shutdown and decontaminated before being re-opened.

He said that the control tower, being a critical and sensitive facility could not be shutdown and that four mobile control towers were acquired while two additional ones are being expected to arrive the country soon. (NAN)

 The  Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Sunday said that nine  persons died  in an auto crash that occurred on  the Ilorin- Ogbomoso Road.

Its Sector Commander in Kwara,  Mr Jonathan Owoade, confirmed the development  at a news conference on Sunday in Ilorin.

According to him, the fatal crash occurred opposite the Ilorin International Airport in Ilorin.

Owoade said that  the crash was as a result of speed limit violation which  involved a light ash private Toyota Corolla car, with registration number: LRN787FE and a white commercial Toyota Hiace bus, with registration number: AFN06YL.

He said that the crash which  involved 20 persons, had eight persons  injured, while  nine others were confirmed dead.

“This morning, we were informed of the unfortunate crash which occurred on the Ilorin-Ogbomoso highway around the airport authority area.

“A car coming out of the airport ran across the road, and its driver thought  that he would have sped and  crossed the road before the bus gets to his car.

“The fatal crash happened at about 8.00 a.m., with  20 persons involved. Eight  sustained injuries ranging from open wounds to burns and sadly, nine others lost their lives.

“Before we reached the scene of the crash, the injured had been taken to the state general hospital by passersby, while the corpses had been deposited at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital mortuary  by the patrol team.

“While we wish the injured quick recovery, we are also pleading with motorists to be patient while driving.

“Pedestrians and other road users too should be conscious and be careful while on the road.

“We commiserate with the families of the dead and we pray that  the souls of the departed rest well,” Owoade said. (NAN)

Wife of a celebrity, Mrs Capriz Duke, has advised women married to celebrities to be patient, understanding and pray that women who come too close do not snatch their husbands.

Duke, wife of the president, Creative Industry Group (DIG), and musician, Felix Duke, spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to her, “it is really not an easy task to be married to an entertainer who is a public figure, especially to women who want to be identified with success.”

She advised women married to celebrities to be understanding because mixing up with people would surely contribute to their success in the industry.

“You just have to be patient and understanding, knowing that this is a world of entertainment.

“If you are a wife of a celebrity or a public personality, you have to be ready to overlook many things, if not, you will develop high blood pressure.

“You have to be in the world of entertainment too and even if you are not, see yourself as one, you have to learn to play along,” she said.

Lady Duke said from inception, you should know that getting married to an entertainer involves sharing him with various kinds of women.

She said that the most important thing is to pray that desperate women do not succeed because they are ready to take over completely.

“Some of us started suffering with these guys when they were no body and these women overlooked them because they had nothing to offer.

“But as soon as they become somebody, they are ready to go to any mile to snatch your property, some desperate women only want to be identified with success,” she said.

According to her, it is only hot when the couples are younger but once they start getting older, maturity sets in and the men would begin to appreciate their wives better.

She recalled that at the early stage of her marriage, when her man was still singing, desperate messages and calls were great distractions but she remained calm.

“Those days, I would be home and some women will call or text but the best thing was to avoid monitoring or checking his phones.

“With time, you will understand what it is to be married to a celebrity because as a younger person, it is a different mindset but as you get older, you get matured,” she said.

She then advised wives of celebrities to learn to remain calm, attractive, friendly and non possessive because their husbands are public figures but importantly, pray for them. (NAN)

Sen. Chimaroke Nnamami (PDP-Enugu) has said that Enugu East Senatorial Zone should produce the next governor of Enugu State in 2023 according to the state’s governorship zoning arrangement.

The former governor, who said this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, also said that equity demands that the arrangement be respected by political stakeholders in the state.

He said that the arrangement had fostered peace and harmony among the people of the state.

The lawmaker said that it also gave every zone a sense of belonging and involvement in the politics and governance of the state.

He commended former governor of old Anambra, Sen. Jim Nwobodo, former governor of old Enugu State, Chief Okwesilieze Nwodo among others, for their contributions to the evolution of the zoning principle.

Nnamani was the governor of the state from 1999 to 2007. He was succeeded by by Mr. Sullivan Chime from Enugu West zone from 2007 to 2015.

The incumbent governor, since 2015, Mr  Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is from Enugu North zone.

He said that after reviewing the positions of statesmen, he was convinced that the political class would be guided by history in picking the next governor of the state from Enugu East zone.

Nnamani described zoning as a major selling point of the PDP in Enugu State, adding that it had ensured peace, balance and even development.

He expressed the hope that other political parties in the state would uphold zoning and cede their governorship tickets to Enugu East zone. (NAN)

When the show started, seven Housemates would have been more tense than the others. B.U., Libo, Nale, Thato, Venus, Vyno and Zino started the day with Nominations hanging over their heads, and they knew that at least one of them would be Evicted.

Lawrence wasted no time in getting to the first Eviction, naming Zino as the first Housemate to have to walk out of the door for the night. The disappointment was clear on his face, and the other Housemates were shocked: they’ve made no bones about the fact that they see him as a little brother, and his positive attitude was much appreciated in the House. The only reason that Zino was on the list at all is because Gash1 used his power as Head of House to save Norman and replace him with Zino.

During his exit interview with Lawrence, Zino remained positive. “It’s been a privilege,” he said, referring to his time in the Big Brother Mzansi House. He also said that he would miss all of the Housemates. Then Lawrence started asking a hypothetical question. “You walk into the House,” he said, “single – no relationship outside the House – which Housemate…”

“Venus!” Zino interrupted, saving Lawrence a bit of time. Clearly, he had thought about this hypothetical situation before. After that, it was time to bid Zino farewell, which they did with the whole studio crew singing Happy Birthday To You as he left the stage.

Lawrence put Nale and Libo out of their misery early in the night, which might have been nice for them, but would only have succeeded in dialling up the tension for the remaining  Nominees. Eventually, though, Lawrence returned to the House, telling each of the Housemates in turn that they were safe. He finished with B.U. but did not tell him he was safe. Instead, he told him that he had been Evicted, and would need to leave the House. B.U. was clearly surprised, and Venus was clearly upset.

He soon shook it off, however, and was in good spirits during his exit interview with Lawrence. He said his only regret was that he hadn’t cooked enough vegan meals for his fellow Housemates, meaning that he hadn’t done enough to show them the benefits of the lifestyle.

After the double Eviction, the House was shook, but Biggie had another twist to shake it up even further: until further notice, the Housemates are allowed to engage in “Nominations conspiracy” – discussing who they will Nominate and teaming up. This can only happen in a designated area, and only at certain times. Things are about to get interesting.
