  • Lagos Pledges To Support NAHCON On PPP Initiatives

Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, has stated that the state government will help the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) in its PPP projects.

The pledge was made while the Deputy Governor was visiting members of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) Board of Directors, led by Chairman Alhaji Zikrullah Kunle Hassan, who paid him a courtesy call.

Dr. Hamzat remarked that Lagos will continue to support the Commission in its efforts to improve services to Nigerians, as the state government takes satisfaction in doing things that benefit the country’s residents.

While commending NAHCON for introducing the Hajj Savings Scheme, Dr. Hamzat said that hajj operations should be made easier and seamless for the benefit of pilgrims so that Muslims will perform Hajj without much stress or fear.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman – National Hajj Commission of Nigeria – Alhaji Zikrullah Kunle Hassan, described Lagos as a significant pilgrimage point in the country, just as he applauded the State government for supporting hajj operations, especially during the launching of the Hajj Savings Scheme.

The Chairman noted that Hajj operations have over the years become an exercise that involves a lot of operations and logistics and, therefore, there is a need to manage the exercise with effective sensitisation and digital transformation of its operations.

He disclosed that to further enhance Hajj operations in the country, the Commission has come up with the establishment of a Hajj Institute to train its personnel in the nitty-gritty of operations, imploring the State government to send its officers for training to enhance their on-the-job performance.

The Chairman said the Commission is thinking out of the box to raise funds for its operations, being self-sustaining, hence adopting the PPP initiative using its property across the country for the good of the Commission, adding that NACHON is already collaborating with the Kano State Government on the initiative.

  • Super Falcons seek spot at Morocco 2022 Women AFCON finals

Nigeria, the nine-time champions and Cup holders, say they are prepared to face the Lady Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire in the last qualifying round of the 2022 Women Africa Cup of Nations on Friday in Abuja.

The Super Falcons advanced to this round after a narrow 2-1 aggregate win over Ghana’s Black Queens. They will face the high-scoring Lady Elephants, who thrashed their Niger Republic counterparts 20-0 on aggregate in the previous round.

Coach Randy Waldrum has had most of the players invited to a training camp in Abuja, and Waldrum says the girls are fully aware of the significance of the major match.

“Every player in camp is aware of the high importance of these two matches against Cote d’Ivoire.

“We must win to get to the Women AFCON where the African teams for the FIFA Women’s World Cup will emerge.

It is one step at a time, but we all know that we must win well in Abuja on Friday.”

Friday’s encounter, which kicks off at 4pm, is the first game the Super Falcons will play at the MKO Abiola Stadium since defeating their Senegalese counterparts 2-0 in April 2016, in the final qualifying round of the 10th Women AFCON finals held in Cameroon.

Veteran defender Onome Ebi said the Nigerian girls are highly motivated for the encounter on several fronts, including reaching Morocco 2022 to defend their continental crown, having the opportunity to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup and avenging a bitter loss to the Ivorians in the qualifying race for the 2020 Olympic Women’s Football Tournament.

  • Kyari, Bawa Confessed Working Directly With Cartels In Brazil And Ethiopia

On Wednesday, the drug-trafficking scandal involving sacked top officer Abba Kyari progressed, with new information linking him to lords in Brazil and Ethiopia.

Ethiopia has emerged as a significant crossroads for drug trafficking in Africa, with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) placing the country’s national carrier under monitoring in mid-last year for allegedly returning the largest number of captured drug couriers.

As concerns were being posed regarding its officers accused by the Nigerian Police leadership as partners in the drug deals, the agency published a new batch of incriminating material yesterday.

Femi Babafemi, the agency’s spokesperson, in a statement, promised blind justice for all involved in the drug trafficking saga, but very particular about the Kyari team connecting directly with the barons and couriers.

Police had alleged that NDLEA men at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, on agreement and long association, created a safe passage for two named drug couriers before the police team later found out their accomplices and picked them up.

In what appears a disputation of Police’s claim, Babafemi said, “To correct some inaccuracies in the information in the public space that NDLEA officers at the Enugu airport were the ones who received from the cartel, details about the mule coming from Addis Ababa, the agency wishes to quote from the transcript of Abba Kyari’s recorded conversation with our undercover officer and a portion of ASP James Bawa’s statement to the police as documented in the police investigation report, a copy of which was made available to the agency, that it’s an established fact that it’s the Abba Kyari’s team that was contacted by the cartel and without doubt the records clearly show how their ring works.”

Dipping into hitherto redacted information, Babafemi who is the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, further disclosed, “Recall that after NDLEA requested for Kyari and others for interrogation.

They were questioned by the police, after which they were handed over along with the report of their interrogation.

“According to the police investigation report, ASP James Bawa in his statement to the police revealed that ‘he was called by an informant identified as IK from Brazil who told him that a drug courier will be arriving on board Ethiopian Airlines in Enugu.

“He explained further that a pointer from IK, the Brazil-based informant met with him at about 1420hrs on January 19 outside the airport and showed him a picture of the courier.

Subsequently, they sighted the suspect as he exited the airport terminal after all arrival clearance formalities, and he was arrested with another associate.”

A part of the taped conversations involving Kyari, was also released.

NDLEA said, “In his own recorded conversation with our undercover officer, Kyari also said the following: ‘They are greedy, seriously greedy (referring to his informants). We tried to have them accept 40 per cent but they refused, except 50 per cent.

They know the rudiment of the deal very well, they are the ones that do the packing.

‘From Brazil, one of the informants accompanied it to Ethiopia.

You understand; one of the informants accompanied the goods to Ethiopia; one of the informants that give us information. He is the boy of the big baron.

‘Addis, from Addis it will be given to those to proceed further with it, he will get their snapshots without their knowledge.

Yes, he will reveal those that are conveying it further, get snapshots of theirs without their knowledge and send to us (Abba Kyari’s team).

‘So we already know the goods, picture and the clothes they are wearing, hope you understand. We know your name, he will give us everything. So, automatically my team will just be waiting, they will just see you and arrest you.’”

Providing further munition to nail the disgraced cop, Babafemi’s statement also revealed, “responding to our officer’s question on whether his boys are usually stationed inside or outside the airport, Abba Kyari said, ‘Yes, yes, some are outside while some are inside.

They will just allow you to finish arrival formalities and arrest you the moment you come out.’”

In what could pass for buck-passing, he concluded by saying, “the above no doubt establishes who the cartel was relating with and their modus operandi.

Again, this is to correct inaccuracies in some reports and assure that the agency will not deviate from evidence-based.”
Meanwhile, the chairman, NDLEA, Brigadier-General Buba Marwa (retd), on Wednesday said the war against illicit drugs and trafficking in Nigeria is yielding positive results.

Marwa said this in Abuja during a sensitization training on drugs prevention, treatment and care organized by the United Nations Office On Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for NLDEA personnel and journalists, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported.

He said the arrest of Abba Kyari is a clear message of the agency’s commitment to the fight against drug abuse. Marwa said that those given the responsibility to fight crime, including illicit drugs trade, must not be proponents of the crime.

He also said the fight against drug abuse is a serious business as he assured that the agency remains committed to ensuring a drug-free nation.

The UNODC country representative, Oliver Stolpe, said the drug use epidemic affects around 40 million Nigerians out of which around three million have drug use disorders.

  • Twitter adds Flutterwave, Paga as Payment providers for Services.

Twitter’s microblogging platform has incorporated the pan-African payment systems Barter by Flutterwave and Paga to its Tips service.

Flutterwave’s Barter is a web and mobile software that allows individuals to send and receive money from around the world quickly and securely at low rates.

Paga is an African payment and financial services ecosystem.

Their consumer app allows customers to access and use money in the way that is most convenient for them.

Flutterwave, meantime, has raised $250 million in series D funding, valuing the company at over $3 billion, making it one of Africa’s most valuable start-ups.

The new funds will drive Flutterwave’s expansion plan to accelerate customer acquisition in existing markets, grow through mergers and acquisitions, and develop complementary products.

On the operations modalities, Twitter explained that turning on Tips adds an icon next to profile, which will now also have a link to Barter and Paga, for quick and easy person-to-person tipping.

“Tap the icon, and you’ll see the payment services or platforms that the account has enabled, you can select whichever you prefer. Once you select the service you want to use, you’ll be taken off Twitter to the selected app to send funds.

Twitter takes no cut. Barter and Paga join Chipper, which was rolled out in 2021, as payment services available for people in various African countries,” the firm stated.

According to Twitter, Bitcoin addresses can be added to Tips. Twitter said, “additionally, when you enable Tips on your profile, you can also add your Bitcoin address. People can copy your address and paste it into a Bitcoin wallet of their choice to send you a payment directly.”

Commenting on Barter’s inclusion as a payment provider to Tips, CEO and Founder of Flutterwave, Olugbenga Agboola said, “As a frequent Twitter user, creators, artists and businesses add immense value to my experience on the platform —creating an avenue to reward or tip them is a good step in the right direction by Twitter.

So we’re excited to be partnering with them to create a safe, fast and easy way to tip these amazing creators through Barter by Flutterwave. We have the reach and abilities to enable creators from Africa to receive tips from parts of the world.

I will likely be one of the biggest users of Tips, and that’s because it’s an awesome feature that has huge potential for the creator economy in Africa.”

The Founder and CEO of Paga, Tayo Oviosu, said, “Our mission at Paga is to simplify payments for individuals and businesses. Through this partnership with Twitter, via Tips, we can create an effective way for Creators to get paid into their Paga accounts, directly from Twitter.

As an avid Twitter user, I’m thrilled about this partnership. Creators are a key demographic we are building for at Paga, and this partnership allows us to enable them to effectively monetize their work.

We are really excited about solving payments in the most innovative ways, especially with companies such as Twitter.”

Through the payment partner interface, Twitter said people will be able to support individuals and organizations across Nigeria and the sub-Saharan region via multiple modes of payment including UPI, credit and debit cards, net banking, wallets and more.

“The inclusion of additional payment providers to Twitter’s Tips feature represents an expansion of access to pathways for people on the continent to get paid, as Twitter expands its Africa presence since setting up operations in Ghana. It also marks a major step in Digital currencies that encourage more people to participate in the economy and help people send each other money across borders and with as little friction as possible,” it stated.

  • Eguavoen Admits Selection Of Team Is Headache Ahead Ghana Clash

Austin Eguavoen, the head coach of the Super Eagles, is already having nightmares about who to pick for the vital Qatar 2022 World Cup qualification play-off against Ghana next month.

On March 24, the Eagles face the Black Stars in Cape Coast, before the two teams meet again three days later at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

On Tuesday night, Eguavoen stated this during the team’s virtual meeting with Sports Minister Sunday Dare and top Nigeria Football Federation officials.

“We have two tough games against Ghana next month, but I’m not too worried because we have a squad that knows it’s a mountain that we have to climb,” Eguavoen stated.

“We have a good headache to deal with – which is a surplus of good players. I want to thank the Government and the NFF for all the support during the AFCON; we will need even greater support for the World Cup play-off.

  • Rangers to sell Aribo for N2.8b

According to Allnigeriasoccer.com, Glasgow Rangers are willing to sell midfield maestro Joe Aribo for a reduced cost during the summer transfer window.

The Nigerian international, whose contract with the Light Blues expires on July 1, 2022, has made it clear that he is not interested in extending his time at Ibrox Stadium.

Rangers value Aribo at €10 million (N5.6 billion in Nigerian currency), but may consider proposals as low as €5 million (N2.8 billion) in the summer.

Because the Super Eagles star’s contract expires at the end of next season, the Scottish Premiership champions have reduced his asking price ahead of the summer transfer window.

Five Premier League clubs namely Crystal Palace, Watford, Brentford, Southampton and Aston Villa are plotting a summer move for the versatile left-footed central midfielder.

Since landing at Rangers from Charlton Athletic in 2019, Aribo has made 127 all-competition appearances, scoring 23 goals.
On the international stage, the 25-year-old impressed for the Super Eagles despite their early elimination from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

  • Nigeria, Ghana Seek End To Retaliatory Tariff, Trade Policies

Worried about the trade tension between Nigeria and Ghana, members of the private sector in the two countries, many of whom are largely affected, have sought an end to imposition of restrictive trade rules and counter-actions between the countries.

While there are claims of resolution, private sector operators are worried about the effect on trade and the two countries’ economic development.

Ghana High Commissioner to Nigeria, Rashid Bawa, expressed readiness by the Government of the Republic of Ghana to cooperate, collaborate and work closely with the Nigerian government for the sustainable development of the economies of both countries.

He stated this at the 2022 forum of Ghana Nigeria Business Council (GNBC) and Ghana Investment Promotion Council (GIPC) for Chief Executive Officers, in Lagos, yesterday.

Represented by Consul-General of Ghana in Lagos, Madam Samata Gifty Bukari, Bawa, said relations between the two countries have been sustained by collaborations between their private sectors, adding that this development has positioned Ghana and Nigeria as the two dominant economies in the West African sub-region.

He mentioned that the perennial tension between Ghana and Nigerian traders in Ghana are being resolved. Let me disclose that the Ministers of Trade of Ghana and Nigeria, late last year, signed a joint agreement that establishes a framework to guide the engagement between the two countries in resolving issues between Ghanaian retail traders and their counterparts from Nigeria.

“I can, however, assure you that the Government of the Republic of Ghana is committed to the timely implementation of the framework of engagement between Ghanaian and Nigerian traders.

“ As the economic and trade relations between the two countries warm up, as world economies are beginning to find ways of functioning in the midst of the pandemic, the desire for deepening cooperation among enterprises is growing stronger.

It is, however, disheartening to learn that many Nigerian entrepreneurs still fall short of the knowledge of and connectivity to the Ghanaian market. Many are oblivious of the huge potentials that exist in Ghana.

“It is a matter of fact that mutual understanding of the economies of our two countries with a positive attitude would further promote and strengthen our bilateral relations and escalate the growth of business cooperation,” he said.

In his remarks, President, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Dr. Michael Olawale-Cole, said for more than five decades, Nigeria and Ghana have established bilateral relationships in line with mutual interest of both countries for their individual economic development agenda and shared prosperity for the West African region.

The relationship between the two largest economies in the West Africa sub region has metamorphosed from merchandise trade into international trade in goods and services.

Speaking on the topic, ‘Ease of doing business in Ghana to Nigeria businessmen and women’, Olawale-Cole, said this programme is aimed at facilitating conversation on business environment in Ghana and most importantly deepen awareness on how Nigeria entrepreneurs can explore opportunities in Ghana without falling foul of the extant laws, policies, and several regulatory measures while doing their businesses in Ghana.

He said internationally oriented Nigerian businesses have deep footprints in Ghana cutting across key economic sectors like banking, insurance, oil and gas, industrial commodities, consumer goods, construction and real estate, telecommunication, maritime and freight forwarding. Officially, Nigeria has the second largest business portfolio in Ghana, only second to China.

Recently, he said the relationship between the two countries have suffered a series of setbacks occasioned by episodes of trade attacks and disputes. The use of discriminatory trade policies, high tariffs, border closures, and harsh business environment have impacted negatively on our trade volumes.

He noted that the Chamber of Commerce and the Business Council should work assiduously towards boosting trade between the two countries’ neighbouring countries.

“We must strategize to explore the opportunities coming with the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

While both parties have expressed their grievances and resolutions sought, we need to move forward to more trade and investments for economic prosperity.
