  • Global effort to defend journalism needs a reset – here’s how to do better

Media freedom is increasingly under threat around the world from a combination of economic and political factors. For some years now, digital technology has undermined the business model that has traditionally sustained journalism. That – and an increasing concentration of media ownership in many countries – means there are less jobs and less outlets available for journalists to work in.

Then there is the very real danger in which many journalists are forced to work. In December 2021, a record 488 journalists and media workers were in prison globally. And 46 journalists were killed while doing their jobs in 2021 – nearly one a week. Although this represents a 20-year low, it highlights the continuing challenge facing media freedom.

This week, 50 foreign ministers are meeting at the third Global Media Freedom Conference in Estonia to renew and strengthen their commitments to advocating for media freedom. These 50 states comprise the Media Freedom Coalition (MFC) – an intergovernmental partnership established in 2019 by the UK and Canada.

Alliance: the 50 states that make up the Media Freedom Coalition.
    Media Freedom Coalition

But what impact, if any, is the coalition having on the physical, legal, and economic threats that journalists face? Our two-year evaluation of the Media Freedom Coalition – published this week – shows that the MFC still has a long way to go before it can claim to be helping to reverse the global decline in media freedom.

    Naming and shaming

The Media Freedom Coalition has so far published 24 joint statements publicly condemning those who violate media freedom, such as the authorities in Belarus, China, Egypt, Myanmar, the Philippines, Russia, Uganda and Yemen.

For example, the coalition recently published a statement expressing “deep concern at the Hong Kong and mainland Chinese authorities’ attacks on freedom of the press and their suppression of independent local media in Hong Kong”. These statements are designed to impose a ‘diplomatic price’ on those who violate media freedom by publicly condemning and stigmatising their actions.

But these public statements have often been very poorly publicised. Until very recently, the coalition did not even have its own dedicated website or social media accounts. As one media freedom activist told us, “a statement that nobody sees has no impact”.

Joint statements relating to abuses of media freedom in specific countries were signed, on average, by just 57% of member countries. Some members have been particularly quiet.

Spain (27%) and Belize (27%) are the worst offenders, having both signed fewer joint statements than even Afghanistan (31%) – which surprisingly has not been publicly suspended or expelled from the coalition, despite what Reporters Without Borders (RSF) describes as an “extremely fraught” environment for journalists in Afghanistan, since the Taliban takeover.

In fact, the coalition has not yet published any public statements condemning abuses of media freedom by some of its own members – despite clear violations of media freedom in countries such as Afghanistan, Croatia, Slovenia, Sudan and the US. In Sudan, one media worker recently told us:

There is no such thing as media freedom in Sudan right now. Sudan is not safe for journalists anymore. Why is the Media Freedom Coalition not talking about this?

Many coalition members are also failing to lead by example. According to RSF’s World Press Freedom Index, three times as many MFC states went down in the rankings in 2021, than improved their positions. This suggests that media freedom is in decline even within some states that support it.

The amounts of funding allocated to supporting media freedom under the coalition have been relatively very small. Only 28% of MFC members have made a financial contribution to the UNESCO-administered Global Media Defence Fund which aims to bolster journalists’ legal protection and support investigative journalism.

Overall, the report’s lead author, Dr Mary Myers argues that, “Partly because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the actions of the MFC have not been as rapid, bold or visible as was initially promised.”

How to defend media freedom – better

But despite these limitations, there is reason for optimism. The coalition has recognised many of these issues itself. It has a new secretariat, executive group members and online presence.

The coalition also has some early successes it can build on. Several states have made positive improvements domestically, as a direct result of joining the MFC. For instance, in July 2020, Sierra Leone repealed its criminal libel law, removing the threat of imprisonment to suppress journalism.

In our report, we identify concrete ways the MFC can continue to improve its efforts to defend media freedom. These include implementing a proactive communications strategy, improving the volume, visibility and support for its public statements and strengthening the minimum requirement for membership to include contributing to the UNESCO Global Media Defence Fund.

Perhaps most importantly, the coalition should explain when and how it will be implementing the “toolkit” of concrete measures designed by its independent advisory body, the High-Level Panel of Legal Experts on Media Freedom. These include practical suggestions such as strengthening consular support to journalists at risk, and providing emergency entry visas for journalists needing to flee oppressive countries.

The former deputy chair of the panel, Amal Clooney, recently urged coalition members to adopt such measures, saying: “It is time for states that claim they defend democracy to start acting like it.”

    We couldn’t agree more.

  • Ways To Boost Your Internet Connection While Working from Home

Want to get the most out of your remote working experience? Explore ways to get better internet quality and signal strength from your residential service.

Stuck working at home? You’re not the only one. Most of the global working population is working remotely. Unless you count front-line medical workers and other essential service workers.

While vaccination drives are proceeding remarkably well in the United States, a lot of people may still be wary about coming into work.

Especially with the aversion many have developed towards congested workplaces and limited space for safe distancing. Therefore, it would not be unreasonable to think that remote working will continue for a while longer.

Of course, this is only possible because over the past decade residential providers have made efforts to expand their infrastructure and services.

Residential connections like Cox internet plans have penetrated a significant majority of the United States. This is what made the remote working model possible in the first place.

However, there are certain ways you can still improve your remote working experience. Here are a few tips on boosting your internet connection and network quality for a smoother working day.

Work Out Some Ground Rules with Others in Your Home

The very first thing you need to do is have a serious talk with everyone who lives with you. Whether it is a partner, spouse, young teenager, or adult roommate, a few ground rules are necessary.

Communicate your schedules with each other, and work out a plan that ensures everyone has equitable access to bandwidth.

At the very least, try time-sharing video conferences or calling software during business hours. That means keeping restricting your downloads to only essential files.

Schedule Downloads and Updates for After Hours

You don’t have to give up downloading altogether. If you have other people working or studying at your home, you can be sure they have just as much need for bandwidth as you do.

You should restrict bandwidth usage to certain apps, such as Netflix or Steam, when you are working. But you can still schedule your games or video files to download as soon as you sign off from work.

That way, you can still ensure your residential connection isn’t all about work.

Disconnect Idle Devices from Your Network

If you’re experiencing network congestion issues, see if you can identify any idle devices and remove them. Even when not in use, devices connected to your home Wi-Fi are still communicating over that network.

Some could have automatic updates enabled, which would interfere with your internet usage. With limited bandwidth available, you can conserve it substantially by disconnecting idle devices that aren’t being actively used all the time.

    Try Switching Router Channels

Routers create a wireless internet network using radio frequencies. Unfortunately, many other appliances and devices also emit radio signals at the same frequencies.

So, it is not unusual for certain radio frequencies to become congested. This congestion interferes with devices trying to access the internet over a Wi-Fi connection.

Depending on your router’s settings, you can switch channel frequencies to less congested channels. Some routers even come with automatic frequency switching, which allows the router to search for the best frequencies on its own.

    Check For a Better Router

If your router continues to offer poor performance, you may want to consider an upgrade. Most router models have upgraded hardware that allows for better throughput.

Throughput is a term referring to the volume of data that can pass through the router at a time. Better routers can handle more throughput, meaning devices can send more data requests and receive the answering information much faster.

Place The Router in a Central Spot

You should also pay attention to where you position your router. The rule of thumb is to place it as close as possible to the center of your home. However, you should still be careful about other stuff.

For example, you don’t want to place your router near a microwave oven or other appliances that could interfere with the signal broadcasts.

Obstacles like concrete or steel walls and doors can also cause signal loss that disrupts your internet experience, so you’ll want to place the router accordingly.

Make sure your router or device isn’t in one of those dead spots every home seems to have. Hopefully, your remote working experience will see significant improvement over the next few days.

  • NFF Names Amuneke Eagles’ Chief Coach

Following the reformation of the technical crew of the Super Eagles, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) named Emmanuel Amuneke, a former Nigerian World Cup standout and former U-20 coach, as the team’s new chief coach.

Augustine Eguavoen would also serve as the team’s Interim Technical Adviser and the federation’s Technical Director.

Amuneke, who will also be the assistant technical adviser to Eguavoen is considered the most garlanded footballers to have come out of Nigeria, who netted both goals that won Nigeria the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations final match against Zambia in Tunis while he also scored the goal that won Nigeria and Africa’s first Olympic football gold medal in 1996. He was part of the Eagles to the USA 1994 World Cup and 1996 Olympic Games, scoring two goals at USA ’94.

As a coach, Amuneke qualified Tanzania for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt and led the Taifa Stars in the finals. He is a member of FIFA and CAF Technical Study Groups.

The Oscar nominees for 2022 were announced on Tuesday, February 8th. With 12 nominations, Jane Campion’s Western drama The Power of the Dog leads the pack.

Denzel Washington, an American veteran actor, was nominated for his 10th Academy Award for his portrayal in The Tragedy of Macbeth.

With this nomination, Washington becomes the most nominated black actor in Oscar history.

    ‘THE MACBETH TRAGEDY’

Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth is a 2021 historical thriller he wrote and directed. The feature film is based on the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, which was first presented in 1606.

“The NFF Board has approved a recommendation of the Technical and Development Committee retaining Augustine Eguavoen as Technical Director/Technical Adviser (interim) while Emmanuel Amuneke becomes the Chief Coach of the Super Eagles.

Salisu Yusuf will be the 2nd Assistant Coach/Chief Coach of the CHAN team and Joseph Yobo will be 3rd Assistant while Aloysius Agu remains the goalkeepers’ trainer,” NFF General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi said.

The reconstitution comes ahead of the potentially –explosive FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 play-off round against the Black Stars of Ghana next month.

Sanusi added: “We acknowledge and appreciate the interest that Mr. Jose Peseiro has shown in Nigeria Football during our very cordial discussions and have absolutely no doubt about his capacity.

We believe that perhaps in the future, there could be an opportunity to work with him. However, in view of the positive performance of the Super Eagles at the just-concluded Africa Cup of Nations, which has given hope to Nigerians and boosted our confidence in the present coaching crew to qualify us for the World Cup in Qatar, we have decided to accept the recommendation of the Technical and Development Committee to retain the Eguavoen-led coaching crew and strengthen it with the addition of Emmanuel Amuneke.”
