  • How to Delete Yourself from the Internet: An Easy Guide

You have probably heard it enough times already, but data is the most valuable commodity in present times. Companies harvest and use your data for their profit. They know a lot about you and can create ads that you are likely to click on. So, it is imperative that you take steps to keep your data safe online. For example, you should only use the official Spectrum billing page to pay your internet bills. Moreover, it can be a good idea not to use your full name online.

You have probably shared a lot of personal information online without knowing. Your social media might have your face, your full name, address, and even phone number. Someone could be out there waiting for any chance they get to use that data. So, deleting sensitive information from the internet can make your online experience safer. You might not be able to delete everything, but it is possible to reduce your data footprint. So, here are a few steps you can take to claim your online privacy back:

    #1: Opt-Out of People-Search Websites

People-search websites can potentially have enough data on you for criminals to use. Hackers can use this data to create socially engineered phishing attempts. So, you should search for your name online and see what comes up. You might find websites like Whitepages, Spokeo, or MyLife that have your address and phone number. Most of these have an opt-out page, but you can also send them a direct email. You should also follow up afterward to make sure that they have deleted your information.

    #2: Delete Unused Accounts

It is easier to forget about old accounts that you don’t use anymore. But these accounts could still have data like your name and pictures. There might be old accounts like MySpace or Vine that you no longer use. Not only could they be embarrassing to look at again, but they are also a potential security risk. These old pages might be publicly accessible and could have sensitive personal information. Moreover, you might have stale accounts on websites you bought something from once.

It isn’t uncommon for internet companies to share data. So, you possibly created an account for one reason, but some other company used it for another purpose. Therefore, you must look for all obsolete profiles, and delete them forever. You can also change the privacy settings and make them inaccessible to the public.

    #3: Delete Old Email Accounts

In 2017, Google announced that Gmail will no longer be scanned for personalized ads. But many other free emailing services still do. So, you should delete your old AOL or Yahoo email accounts that you no longer use. Some better free options other than Gmail are ProtonMail and  StartMail.

    #4: Amplify Social Media Privacy

One of the most common places on the internet with the user’s personal information is social media. Every social media website makes money from targeted ads. So, it is more profitable for them if your data is public. Hence, your social media account might be the most significant factor in creating a data trail. If you want to reduce exposure, you should look at social media privacy settings. There are many ways to make your data less public. You can hide your details like name and phone number from search engines. Moreover, you could also use profile guards to keep your information private.

#5: Remove Personal Information from Google

The popular search engine Google is probably the biggest compiler of people’s data. It is the access point for most companies who want to exploit your sensitive details. Although, Google compiles your data to present more accurate search results personalized for you. But if fraudsters get access to the data, they could use it against you.

So, taking the time to remove your personal information from Google might be the best thing to do. You can access Google’s activity controls and manage your web and app activity and YouTube history. Moreover, you should also request Google to remove cached search results related to you. It is also a good idea to select the “auto-delete” option, so Google continually removes your data from its servers.

    #6: Check Browser Privacy Settings

Most websites these days ask permission to run cookies. They are meant to track your activity and personalize your site experience. However, hackers can use the same cookies to track your data from website to website. Hackers can get into your system by putting malicious cookies in your browser settings. So, before you agree to cookies, you should understand the implications.

Another way to avoid this is to use web browsers designed to keep privacy a priority. DuckDuckGo and Brave are some great options for secure web browsers.

  • BBMzansi – Housemates’ reactions to the first eviction

During the first series of Diary Sessions that followed the double Eviction, the Housemates were all slightly shellshocked after witnessing both Mvelo and Dinkybliss walk out the door. “Last night’s Eviction was quite a shocker,” Nale told Big Brother. “Dinky was a big personality in the House. It made me realise that people [the viewers] want whatever they want.”

“It wasn’t nice,” Vyno said about his first Sunday. “Dinky was trying to open up to me.  She was nice to me throughout. It was a sad moment.” Thato said,  “I was shocked at Dinky leaving. I keep saying to myself, ‘remember, it’s a game. You could leave at any time’.”

“Just seeing Mvelo’s reaction,” remembered Acacia. “You could tell he wanted to cry. I think it shook us up a bit. People just need to up their game.” Themba also spoke about Mvelo’s reaction. “He couldn’t even speak. That was very touching. I also feel bad for Dinky. The fact that I Nominated her also made me feel bad, but I did it for the good of the game.”

“It’s just a bit of a reality hit. That was just a wake-up call,” was Zino’s take on the matter. It appears that the first two weeks in the House somehow convinced the Housemates that they can predict what’s going to happen, and they’ve realised that all bets are off. “From my perspective, people are really going to start taking the game seriously,” opined Nale.

Part of taking the game seriously is competing in the Head of House Games. The title comes with immunity, so it’s not just an empty position. That said, Nale didn’t sound too keen on winning it. “I think I operate better behind the scenes. I think becoming Head of House would be a tricky one.” Thato agreed, “Being Head of House is a clear way to have a target on your back. It’s quite a difficult role.”

While she’s somewhat ambivalent about holding the position herself, Nale’s very clear about who she does not want to have in that position. “I definitely wouldn’t want Mpho as Head of House.” This followed a discussion she had had with Mphowabadimo about tension between them, but the peace-love-and-muesli conclusion to that chat clearly did not extend into the Diary Room.

On the subject of tonight’s HoH Games, Vyno promised that he was “going to give it 100%. This week, I need to show that I can be a leader.” Zino said, “People are gunning for this. It’s the only way to make sure that you’re safe. Everyone is going to be more competitive.”

“I really want to be Head of House,” said Themba. “There is a target on my chest – and I know that for a fact.“ Clearly, the immunity that comes with the title is the most important thing for him, right now; which is understandable, since he was one of only two people who Nominated, last week.

There are still more Diary Sessions to come, but we think we can predict what many of them will contain: shock at the Double Eviction, desire to win Head of House and a realisation that the game – as Mr Holmes would say – is on!

  • MERISTEM STOCK RECOMMENDATION – FEBRUARY 7TH, 2022

    MARKET REVIEW

The Nigerian equities market sustained its bullish run, as the All-share Index increased for the fifth consecutive week by 2.33% WoW to end at 47,279.92pts.

The Year-to-date return closed at 10.68%.

    Performance was largely mixed across sectors as three of five indices closed positive at the end of the trading week;
NGXBNK (+0.83%WoW), NGXOILGAS (+9.69% WoW) and NGXINDUSTR (+3.41% WoW) while NGXCNSMRGDS (-
1.93% WoW), while the NGXINS (-0.81% WoW) index closed in the red.

RTBRISCOE (+40.00% WoW) topped the gainers chart, while COURTVILLE shed 11.67% WoW to top the losers list. On the activity chart, FIDELITYBK topped the list as the most traded stock by volume, while GTCO topped the list as the most traded stock by value.

Performance across sectors has been broadly positive over the past few weeks particularly on bellwether stocks. Last
week, price appreciation on SEPLAT, DANGCEM, PRESCO and MTNN led the gainers chart.

This week, we think there is scope for profit taking on bellwether tickers which have gained significantly over the
past weeks. Most of these stocks are currently trading close to our near-term valuations.

Thus, we expect the market to close negative this week.

  • Rivers APC flags off presidential campaign for Tinubu

The All Progressives Congress (APC), led by Senator Magnus Abe, has launched a campaign in support of former Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu’s presidential bid, claiming that he is not too elderly to run.

The group added that it supports Tinubu because he is equipped to bring about the required changes in the country and might outperform President Muhammadu Buhari, who is older than him.

Wilson Ake, a former senator from Rivers West, announced this yesterday at Abe’s campaign headquarters in Port Harcourt, Freedom House.

“We are supporting Tinubu because we know that he is eminently qualified and he has worked so hard to see APC win,” he said.

“We don’t have that wicked spirit in us, which is why we are saying we must pay back Tinubu what he has put into APC.

We are not against anybody who wants to try. Anybody who wants to try should go ahead, but they shouldn’t feel they must eliminate Tinubu to succeed…”

Similarly, another APC chieftain, Tony Okocha, who is the state coordinator, BAT Support Vanguard, disclosed that the Abe-led faction of APC in the state is rooting for Tinubu in 2023 to ensure he emerges the party flag bearer and eventually, the country’s president.

Okocha said: “We are here to sensitise our people and to thank the National Assembly for approving that power should go back to the people by the decision that direct primaries should be adopted in the selection of whoever will represent us…

“We know he has the Mida’s touch. We know he is competent; we know that he is experienced and we know that he is detribalised. So, if we have a nationalist like that, why won’t we support him?…”

  • NIMC Portal breaks down, Banks, Telcos, Passport Issuance Suffer Lack Of Access

Thousands of telecommunications subscribers around the country have been left stranded due to a technical fault in the National Identity Management Commission portal, which has rendered SIM-related services unavailable.

According to the Federal Government’s decision, the impacted NIMC portal allows telecom companies, the Nigerian Immigration Service, banks, and other organizations to authenticate their clients’ National Identity Numbers before providing service to them.

Following the directive by the Nigerian Communications Commission for the inclusion of NIN in the requirements for all new and existing SIM cards, telecom firms are required to synchronise their SIM registration portals with the NIMC portal in order to verify the details of their subscribers.

Downtime enters sixth day, MTN, Glo, Airtel, 9mobile suspend SIM replacement/acquisition
However, the downtime experienced over the past five days by the NIMC portal has made it almost impossible for telecom firms to sell new SIM cards or retrieve lost lines.

According to a source at MTN who spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorised to speak on the matter, the downtime in the NIMC network which occurred late on Tuesday has brought SIM-related services to a halt.

The source said, “NIMC made it compulsory that before we can register a customer, we have to verify their NIN. The agency gave us a back route to its server.

We connect to the server to verify NIN. When we verify, it will bring the record of the customer (the information the customer gave to NIMC while registering for NIN). We have to confirm the information the customer gave NIMC against what we have.

There’s a way we connect to the NIMC server. It is that server that has been down since Wednesday.
“Before now, we didn’t need NIN to do this.

We just used the customer’s valid ID card and SIM pack. If the customer does not have that, a sworn affidavit is okay.

However, the introduction of NIN has changed that.”

Speaking on how the development might affect the company’s revenue, the official said, “We have registration stores (centres) that attend to hundreds of customers on a daily basis.

In my service centre, we attend to not less than 200 customers in a day.

We can’t really estimate the amount we are losing. Sometimes, after retrieving their lines, some customers can buy as much as N30,000 airtime.

Some can buy as much as N5,000 airtime. So, any day we don’t do business, one service centre can lose up to hundreds of thousands of naira.”

When our correspondents visited some service centres of the telcos, officials and customers narrated their ordeals.

When one of our correspondents paid a visit to a Glo retail outlet in Lagos, a myriad of frustrated subscribers could be seen inside and outside the premises of the service centre.

Some of the subscribers told our correspondent that they had visited the outlet for days on end but they were not attended to due to the NIMC portal glitch.

“Seriously I don’t understand, and I called them to ask if everything was okay before I came here.

I came the other day and they told me the same thing,” a disgruntled subscriber said after being told SIM-related services was yet to be restored due to the NIMC server glitch.
