  • BBMzansi – Johnnie Walker Task

Today saw the Housemates tackle another Task, this one presented by Johnnie Walker. It required them to flesh out a series of ideas based on the theme “Keep Walking”.

Having then been provided with paints, notebooks and pens, the Housemates (who had been divided into two teams, “Connoisseurs” and “Shades of Grey”, after picking numbers from a hat) were then required to develop their concept and use it to paint one of two “Striding Man” statues that were waiting in the Garden.

After a little bit of deliberation from each team, they then got to work on their statues. There seemed to be some themes that both had in common – South African flag colours where to be found on both of their statues – but each approached the concept somewhat differently.

After much splashing of paint and stretched metaphors, the Housemates were called to make their presentation to Biggie.

The Connoisseurs went first, with Nthabii making the presentation as their captain. She stumbled a bit and made the odd mistake when it came to remembering that the slogan was “Keep Walking”, she still gave a detailed explanation of how they executed their concept, including how the base represented a journey – one which they will never stop walking, purple pants that represent the “royal” taste of the brand  and the rainbow-coloured cuffs that represent the LGBTQI+ community.

Terry, as captain of Shades of Grey, followed with her presentation. Their statue had a white footprint on its back, which represents the struggles people against which people rise up. They also incorporated the South African flag as it represents them all as a group.

After that, it was time to await Biggie’s verdict – the jury is still out as to who won the Task. Watch this space…

  • BBMzansi Diary Sessions – Vyno and Nthabii reveal all

The arrival of Vyno and Nthabii shook the tables in Biggie’s House. Consistent with the ‘Beke Le Beke’ theme, which will see twists and adventures unravelling in back to back blows every week, the Housemates on Sunday found the carpet moving from under their feet.

A day since entering the show to much fanfare, the two new Housemates were summoned by Big Brother to report to their first diary sessions.

Protected by the ‘safe space’ code of the sessions, Vyno and Nthabii didn’t hold back their thoughts on the dynamics and personalities in the House.

Vyno’s strategy will be to endear himself to the Housemates. Arriving a week after everyone had already settled could put him in a challenging position.

Failure to cultivate meaningful relationships and organically strike connections could easily leave him out in the cold. And yet, there’s a R2 Million cash prize, fame and more on the table, and Vyno is not about to be boxed as “the new boy”.

“I thought about that the minute I stepped into the House”, he said. “How will I be able to establish relationships with them, having coming in late?

Luckily, I am an open person. They’ve opened up to me. For a person that just stepped in the house, they’ve opened up a lot.

That’s my strategy, I don’t want to feel new. That’s my strategy, I’ve thought about it. With personal conversations, when you reveal who you are and be vulnerability… that really helps. That’s my strategy to stay longer.”

Vyno’s strategy to focus on building solid relationship is already at play. Waiting for no grass to grow, he’s already flirted with Terry.

He told Terry he’s in love with her voice. He has also connected with Sis Tamara. In a heartfelt chat, the two took soulsoulf deep dives.

“I understand how (Sis Tamara) feels misunderstood, being a gay guy. He’s amazing, I like his personality. But he seems to be a bit sensitive with the way he conveys things and wants to be percieved. I understand and respect that line.”

The gag is how Sis Tamara and Terry are particularly close in the House. Could we be seeing a new squad?

Nthabii has found everyone in the House rather welcoming. Both the girls and the guys have been open, polite and warm towards her.

While awe-inspiring, that hasn’t stopped Nthabii from realising that the Housemates are playing a game. She’s discerning, however, and has been to tell that some of the Housemates are really just playing hard.

Nthabii is aware that there’s always a possibility that “someone may come at me the wrong way” just to test her and throw her off her game, but she’s got her eyes on the bag. “I won’t be derailed.”

  • DSTV BB Mzansi – Terry is the new Head of House

As we have come to know, Biggie’s Head of House Challenge is a game of luck and when it comes to being a little spicy, Biggie has his way of making sure these games are always fun and unpredictable.

In a keenly contested game of Beer Pong, Biggie made sure to bring the party to the Games Arena; of course, there was no beer in the six giant cups but that did not stop the BBMzansi Housemates from showing off their party skills in this popular party game.

Each Housemate was given at least one minute to bounce as many balls into the cups as they can. However, Themba set the bar a little high with four balls in his Giant Cups, but this didn’t stop Terry from scoring a whopping five balls, putting her in the lead. While no other Housemate managed to beat this score, we commend the zeal they had in attempting this fun game.

Congratulations to Terry for winning the Head of House; she takes over from Tulz and becomes the second Beke Le Beke Head of House.

To help her run the #BBMzansi House is Themba who is now the new Deputy Head of House. We are excited for her to enjoy the perks of the HoH Bedroom and what better way to enjoy it than with her fave Sis Tamara as her guest.

However, Biggie is as generous as he comes this season and extended Sis Tamara the opportunity to pick one Housemate they would like to invite to the HoH Bedroom and they have picked Zino.

Terry has won immunity from Nominations and is safe from possible Eviction however, her leadership faces the challenge of running a tight ship after the Housemates epically failed to win their 100% Wager.

We all know how basic food supply can lead to food woes in Biggie’s House.

    Gear up there’s a plot twist…

Heavy is the head that wears a crown and Biggie is putting a plot twist to the Live show Nominations today. Unlike the usual Nominations routine, Biggie has decided that only the Head of House and Deputy Head of House are allowed to Nominate Housemates for possible Eviction.

Although Terry and Themba were visibly uncomfortable with this plot twist, a tough decision had to be made and Big Brother made sure they Nominated five Housemates each.

The common names that appeared on both their Nominations list are Dinkybliss, Gash1, Mphowabadimo and Mvelo. However, using her locked in decision with Biggie, Terry decided to stick to her guns and replace Acacia with Norman for possible Eviction

Dinkybliss, Gash1, Mphowabadimo, Mvelo and Norman have been Nominated for possible Eviction this Sunday.

  • CAF Comments and Supports FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s Council of Europe Speech

6TH OCTOBER CITY, Egypt, January 29, 2022/ — The President of the Confederation Africaine de Football (“CAF”) (www.CAFonline.com) Dr Patrice Motsepe received cellphone calls yesterday from numerous football Presidents of African nations supporting the speech that FIFA President Gianni Infantino delivered at the Council of Europe on Wednesday 26 January 2022; as the speech was in line with previous CAF resolutions.

Several commentators unfortunately seem to have misunderstood and misinterpreted President Infantino’s speech. He stated that football is one of the tools that should contribute to the economic and social development and upliftment of many Africans and also to building a better future and dignity amongst many people on the African Continent.

President Infantino did not say that the FIFA World Cup every 2 years will stop Africans from crossing the Mediterranean Sea.

The leadership of the 54 African football nations that are members of CAF have at previous meetings expressed their unanimous support for the FIFA World Cup taking place every 2 years due to the developmental and upliftment benefits to Africa and the developing world.

CAF and the African football community are aware that if African governments, domestic and global businesses and investors and other development and social partners do not significantly contribute, to the provision of quality education, jobs, health services and other infrastructure facilities and create an inclusive and better future for the poor, and particularly Africa’s approximately 300 million youth between the ages of 15 and 25; Africa will experience periods of consistent and sustained political and social instability and uprisings as well as migrations of millions of people within and outside the African Continent, seeking a better and brighter future.

It is in this context that football is seen in Africa as an important tool and partner for governments, investors, philanthropists and the domestic and global football community in contributing to improving the living conditions of the poor and building an inclusive and bright future for the people of Africa and particularly the youth.

CAF appreciates the partnership and commitment of FIFA and President Infantino to the development and growth of football in Africa and the world.

  • Guinea Bissau: African Development Bank Group president announces $30 million package for infrastructure, budget and governance support

The African Development Bank’s initiatives are helping to advance the African Union’s 2063 Agenda in Guinea-Bissau.

BISSAU, Guinea-Bissau, January 31, 2022/ — African Development Bank Group (www.AfDB.org) President Dr Akinwumi A. Adesina has announced a financial package of $30 million dollars to the West African nation of Guinea -Bissau.

Adesina made the announcement on Friday during a visit to Bissau, where he met President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and senior government officials. Discussions covered a range of strategic issues, including strengthening the already close cooperation between the African Development Bank and the Government of Guinea-Bissau, as well as ongoing and future Bank-financed strategic projects to support the country’s economic transformation.

Following the meeting with Embaló, Adesina told reporters that the African Development Bank had earmarked $30 million in financing for projects in Guinea-Bissau.

Of this amount, he said $14 million would be allocated to building road networks between Guinea Bissau and Senegal, while $8.7 million and $7 million would go to budget support and capacity building, and government reforms, respectively.

“I want to assure President Embaló of the African Development Bank’s firm commitment to support his vision for the country and the government’s program,” Adesina said.

He congratulated President Embaló on his achievements and for what he described as the president’s exceptional leadership, especially in Guinea-Bissau’s management of the Covid-19 crisis.

Adesina said Guinea-Bissau had achieved an African record in ensuring that 70% of the country’s population over 18 were vaccinated.

“The African Development Bank will stay here to give you support,” Adesina affirmed.

President Sissoco Embaló said: “For many years, Guinea-Bissau has been affected by political disruptions that have hampered the country’s development. This is the first time we have government stability, and we have to make use of it to accelerate economic transformation. We are grateful that the African Development Bank has always been by our side, even during difficult times. We are ready to work alongside the Bank to lead Guinea-Bissau to a new chapter of its history.”

The African Development Bank plans to set up a delivery unit to speed up project implementation. The Bank financed the establishment of the National School of Administration to improve the performance of economic and financial arms of public administration, as well as project management and monitoring.

Adesina’s visit coincided with the launch of an African Development Bank-supported project to support the empowerment and financial inclusion of women and youth engaged in cashew nut, fruit and vegetable production.

Prime Minister Nuno Nabiam, Vice Prime Minister Soares Sambu and government ministers responsible for agriculture, energy and water, economy, and public works, also met with the African Development Bank head.

“The African Development Bank has shown great flexibility and support during the many crises that the country has gone through, and the Covid-19 pandemic has not been an exception,” Prime Minister Nuno Nabiam said. “History will mark this visit,” he added.

Guinea-Bissau’s agriculture-based economy is dependent on cashew nut exports and has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic. The country is currently pursuing a robust program to increase production and make better use of agricultural value chains, professionalize cooperatives and improve their access to financing.

GDP growth in Guinea-Bissau contracted by 2.8% in 2020, halting the positive growth rate the country had experienced since 2015. Economic recovery, however, is expected in 2022, with the resumption of trade activities and large-scale vaccination against Covid-19.

The African Development Bank’s initiatives are helping to advance the African Union’s 2063 Agenda in Guinea-Bissau, with a strategy oriented around inclusive growth, and governance-strengthening through support for infrastructure development and agriculture production.

Adesina was accompanied on his visit to Guinea-Bissau by several African Development Bank officials, namely Acting Vice President for Regional Development, Integration and Delivery, Yacine Fall, Director-General for West Africa, Marie-Laure Akin-Olugbade, Deputy Director General for West Africa Joseph M. Ribeiro and Senior Economist for Guinea-Bissau Simone Cuiabano.

  • Liberia: African Development Bank extends $10 Million Grant to Enhance Climate Information Systems

The funding will strengthen the country’s capacity to produce tailored, sector-specific climate information services for the benefit of the most vulnerable

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast, January 31, 2022/ — The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (www.AfDB.org) has approved a $10 million grant from the Green Climate Fund, for which the Bank is the accredited agency, to improve Liberia’s early warning weather systems.

The project will also receive $431,969 from the Bank’s ClimDev Africa Special Fund and $1 million from the government of Liberia.

The funding will strengthen the country’s capacity to produce tailored, sector-specific climate information services for the benefit of the most vulnerable.

Weather disasters cost the country around $6.17 million each year, a figure that is expected to almost double in the next decade, and triple by 2040 under the baseline scenario.

Samuel D. Tweah, Jr., Liberia’s Minister of Finance and Development Planning, said: “Liberia will be better equipped to generate and disseminate accurate climate and weather information for climate change mitigation and early warning, food security, water security and environmental protection.

These improvements will enable us to understand how disaster losses occur and how to avoid them in the future, saving lives and preventing economic losses.”

Al Hamndou Dorsouma, the Bank’s Officer-In-Charge for Climate Change and Green Growth, said: “This project underscores the African Development Bank’s commitment to supporting African countries to improve the use of climate information services, which are key drivers of climate resilience, and will be vital to ensuring a green recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Liberia’s Environmental Protection Agency will execute the project on behalf of the government over five years. It will directly benefit around 2.3 million farmers and coastal residents, who bear the brunt of climate events.

Around 5.4 million people in weather-dependent sectors will benefit indirectly, including those in agriculture and energy production.

The project will entail the installment of a weather radar at the country’s Roberts International Airport and establish unmanned aerial systems for upper-air observation.

It will promote the establishment of interlinked community and national early warning systems.
