An Illinois home that is almost entirely submerged underground nicknamed the ‘basement house’ has gone viral for its bizarre set up.
The unique Deer Creek house was listed on the real estate website Zillow earlier this week and immediately caught the internet’s attention.
The 832 square foot home is located on a spacious lot and only has it’s roof visible as it is predominantly underground.
It features two bedrooms and one bathroom that comes equipped with a washer and dryer and the property even comes with an above ground shed.
The house, built in 1951, doesn’t look like much from the outside but photos reveal a relatively cozy home with small windows that let sunlight in.
The home has garnered some mixed reactions online- with some unironically saying they wouldn’t mind living underground while others have been left scratching their heads at why the home even exists.
‘No underground parking? I’m disappointed,’ one person jokingly tweeted.
But another person was not impressed, tweeting: ‘Did the house burn down and they just roofed the foundation?’
One person simply tweeted: ‘weird’ in reaction to the home, while someone else tweeted: ‘I cant even begin to imagine what their anxiety is like every time it rains. How is this even safe?’
‘I was prepared to hate it, but it’s actually kind of an average modest home on the inside. Personally, I prefer more natural light but, hey, with the way things are going we’ll all be living underground soon,’ someone else tweeted.
Another person tweeted: ‘This actually looks cozy as hell and I bet the heating and AC costs would be cheap. Plus you don’t have to worry about getting on a ladder to do the gutters!’
‘Fu**in Illinois trying to win me over with cool basement houses and all those neat old signs and buildings. It won’t work!’ someone else tweeted.
