On Thursday, December 1, 2022, Governor Gavin Newsom and First Lady Jennifer Siebel Newsom will conduct the 91st Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at the California State Capitol.
Tinashe, the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles, cast members of Dear San Francisco, the love letter to City by the Bay, Chrissy Marshall, the Wilton Rancheria Tribe, the Bandura Ensemble of Sacramento, the Grant Union High School drumline, and UC Davis acapella groups The Afterglow and The Spokes will perform during this year’s festivities.
The Governor and First Partner, along with special guest Layla Datskyy, will light the Capitol tree. The California Department of Developmental Services and the Alta California Regional Center selected the eight-year-old from Rocklin, California to symbolize the roughly 400,000 Californians with intellectual and developmental impairments. Layla, a third-grade student at O.W. Erlewine Elementary School, enjoys listening to and viewing music videos. She also enjoys playing with dolls and observing the facial expressions of others.
This event, which dates back to the early 1930s, will celebrate the unique holiday traditions, indigenous heritage, and inclusive spirit of California.
The State Capitol tree for 2022 is a 65-foot-tall white fir that was donated by the U.S. Forest Service Pacific Southwest Research Station and taken from a California forest. The tree will be decked with roughly 250 traditional ornaments and 250 ornaments handcrafted by children and adults with intellectual and developmental impairments.
