Logan McDonald (born April 4, 2002) is an Australian rules player with the Australian Football League’s Sydney Swans (AFL). The Sydney Swans selected him with the fourth overall pick in the 2020 AFL draft.
McDonald began his playing career at the beginning of high school with the East Fremantle Junior Football League’s Applecross Mount Pleasant Junior Football Club. He played for the club for a total of three years, earning a premiership, competing in two grand finals, and receiving two best and fairest medals.
Additionally, he played football for Aquinas College. After averaging three goals per game during his early years with the Perth Football Club, he was nominated to the Under 16s All Australian team in 2018 as a forward. In 2019, he played 6 games for Perth’s colts and averaged 1.5 goals per game while kicking 9 goals.
Logan McDonald represented Western Australia in the 2019 AFL Under 18 Championships, in which he scored three goals in three games. In the first two games of the 2020 WAFL season, McDonald kicked seven goals to raise his game to a new level.
McDonald won Perth’s goalkicking award and ended second in the league’s goalkicking award with 21 goals and an average of 2.33 goals per game. McDonald was selected by Sydney with the fourth overall pick, despite projections from draft experts placing him anywhere between picks 2 and 5.
AFL career
McDonald made his AFL debut in the opening round of the 2021 season, when Sydney stunned Brisbane Lions by 31 points. On his debut, McDonald was a star for the Swans, scoring three goals. The following week, he scored two more goals while playing alongside forward superstar Lance Franklin. Together, they scored five goals.
