  • Multiple fatalities in three different crashes in Free State

The Free State Emergency Services have verified that eight persons were killed in three different vehicle incidents early on Friday morning.

In the first accident, five people were killed when two minibus taxis collided on the N6 Road between Reddersburg and Bloemfontein. Eleven individuals sustained significant injuries and were sent to local hospitals.

In the second incident, one person was killed when a taxi and a car collided on the same section of the N6 near Smithfield.

Two persons were killed when a truck and two automobiles collided on the N3 road near Villiers.

Since the beginning of the holiday season, the province has experienced a string of fatal traffic accidents, including a horrific bus accident on the N8 in November, in which a bus collided with a truck. The tragedy resulted in eight fatalities and more than sixty injuries.

William Bulwane, the Free State MEC for Police, Roads, and Transport, urged motorists to be cautious and to always obey the regulations of the road in order to prevent needless road accidents and fatalities.

  • Andre Onana hangs up his international football gloves

Andre Onana, the goalkeeper for Cameroon and Inter Milan, formally announced his retirement from international football on Friday.

The Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), chaired by Samuel Eto’o, suspended the 26-year-old for disciplinary issues during the World Cup in Qatar.

The first-string goalkeeper was listed as “missing” on the team sheet for England’s 3-3 draw with Serbia in Group G of the World Cup.

In response to accusations of a disagreement over tactics, head coach Rigobert Song told the media that he had to “put the team ahead of the individual.”

Despite not providing context or reasons for his retirement, Onana stated in a statement that his “journey with the Cameroonian national team has ended” and that he “will continue to support as a fan.”

  • Catholic groups gear up to shelter record number of migrants amid Texas freeze

Migrants, including Blaidimar, 8, from Venezuela, warm themselves by a fire outside the U.S.-Mexico border fence while waiting to make asylum claims in El Paso, Texas, on Dec. 21, 2022, as seen from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. / Photo by John Moore/Getty Images

    Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Dec 22, 2022 / 14:45 pm (CNA).

As a Christmas freeze hits Texas, Catholic groups across the state are struggling to help the many homeless migrants facing record-low temperatures.

With temperatures expected in the teens and wind chills around zero in parts of the state, Catholic groups in Texas are ramping up efforts to help with food, supplies, and shelter.

“The cold snap poses a real threat and lives hang in the balance at the border,” Dylan Corbett, executive director of Hope Border Institute, told CNA.

In partnership with the Diocese of El Paso, Hope Border Institute organizes efforts to provide shelter, medical support, and other humanitarian aid to the several thousand migrants waiting to legally pass through the border.

The Texas Tribune reported today that a recent surge in migrant encounters showed a daily average of 2,254, with more than 2.4 million migrants having crossed the border this year.

Amid this record surge in migrants, Texas is facing a record freeze. For the thousands of migrants living in the streets of Texas cities from El Paso to Houston, freezing temperatures could have deadly consequences.

With Texas cities’ shelters already flooded with migrants from the southern border, other homeless individuals may also find it difficult to find a warm place to stay.

The mortal danger of freezing temperatures lives fresh in many Texans’ minds. During the Texas February 2021 freeze, an unprecedented cold snap crippled much of the state’s electricity infrastructure. The February freeze engulfed the state, knocking out power in houses for extended periods and killing hundreds. An estimated 246 Texans were killed by freeze-related causes, according to The Texas Tribune’s reporting on data gathered by the Department of State Health Services.

Despite the challenges, Catholic groups such as the Hope Border Institute and Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston are rising to the occasion.

“We’re working as quickly as possible with our government and NGO partners as well as diverse faith communities to ensure we get people indoors and into safety,” Corbett told CNA. “It’s a challenge for sure, but one we can meet as a community. With hard work and the eyes of faith, this moment can be a Christmas blessing for all of us.”

On the opposite side of Texas, the Houston Transfer Center, which is run by the archdiocese’s branch of Catholic Charities, is also gearing up for the cold. This archdiocesan initiative is helping migrants with food, medicine, and temporary shelter as they journey to their final destinations.

“We’re prepared to help migrants who are coming through our Houston Transfer Center whose travel plans may be affected by the winter weather,” Betsy Ballard, communications director at Catholic Charities of Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, told CNA.

As the dangerously cold weather hits Texas, Ballard explained Catholic Charities will not only be helping migrants but also anyone suffering from the freeze.

“We will be able to help families who have been affected by the cold through our services that provide assistance with food, utilities, rent, and other essential needs,” Ballard said.

  • 20,000 families face Xmas without tap water after pipes burst in freezing snap

Families have been compelled to flush their toilets with snow and wash their dishes with collected rainwater.

There were long queues at a bottled water station in Eastleigh, Hampshire yesterday
Homes in the south of England, including Hampshire, Sussex, and Kent, have been damaged by burst pipes caused by subzero temperatures.

One father with a child described the scenario as “absolutely terrible” and stated that his Christmas preparations were ruined.

Yesterday, there were lengthy lines at a bottled water station in Eastleigh, Hampshire.

Residents have been using bottled water for cooking, washing, and even toilet flushing.

Rob Barber from Southampton reported on the Today show on BBC Radio 4 that his home lost water’suddenly’ on Wednesday afternoon.

Local residents have been collecting bottled water to use for cooking, washing and even flushing their toilets

He stated, “I have a small family at home, including a newborn who is still in diapers, and not being able to flush a toilet so close to Christmas is a terrible circumstance to be in.”

If we don’t see an end in sight, we’ll have to seriously consider whether or not to spend Christmas at home.

Four water stations containing bottled water have been established in the affected area, with daily hours of 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

However, yesterday there were reports that bottled water supplies were running low at one station, and there were large lines of people waiting to get it.

Mr. Barber said, “From what I gather, Southern Water ran out of water at some of these stations and had to close to refill.

There was a one-hour delay at one of the stations, which is obviously awful.Local residents queued for bottled water after their homes were cut off due to a pipe burst

Angie Perkins from Tunbridge Wells stated that the water had been sporadic and off since December 15th.

She, along with thousands of others, has gathered water from bottled water stations set up in the region to shower and wash, while her neighbors have resorted to using snow to flush their toilets.

She stated on BBC Radio 4: ‘Everyone is quite anxious about the Christmas issue.

Everyone has contingency plans, plan Bs. I was going to host Christmas for eight people at my home.

Yesterday, vehicles waited in lengthy lines to purchase bottled water.People queuing for bottled water at a station set in Eastleigh, Hampshire, on Thursday

Southern Water stated that there would be a limited water supply for at least 48 hours as they were under’significant pressure’ due to burst pipes caused by rapid thawing from recent low temperatures.

A few days before Christmas, it is believed that at least 24,000 households are impacted by poor water pressure or no water at all.

In the affected districts, emergency water stations have been established, and the water supplier has offered to deliver water to those who are unable to obtain it.

This station was established because two water collecting locations in Winchester were too distant for some Southampton residents to travel.

Southern Water’s chief operating officer, Bob Collington, stated, “We are currently experiencing substantial pressure on our water supply in parts of Hampshire due to a variety of causes, including leaks caused by the recent “freeze/thaw” incident.

This has caused the demand for water to exceed the capacity of our water treatment facilities to keep the taps running.Hundreds of motorists formed long queues to get bottled water at stations set up across Hampshire

“We have worked hard to resolve this issue by repairing leaks and stabilizing supplies, but in the last 24 hours we have had to make the painful choice to decrease supply in order to preserve vital infrastructure in Hampshire, such as hospitals.

This means that a considerable number of residences are without water or have low pressure, and the situation is expected to persist at least through Friday.

We are continue to supply bottled water to our most needy customers.Families have queued for water after burst pipes cut off around 20,000 homes in the south of England just before Christmas

Additionally, bottled water kiosks are available throughout the region.

We very regret the disturbance and annoyance this causes, especially in the days leading up to Christmas.

We are exerting every effort to restore full service by Sunday.

Ofwat, which governs the industry, stated: ‘Freezing temperatures followed by a rapid thaw have resulted in broken pipes and water supply problems.

We require water companies to stand up, respond immediately, and offer help and compensation where necessary during a difficult time.

The United Kingdom has joined a global reaction against US President Joe Biden’s multibillion-dollar green subsidy scheme.

International Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch has been revealed to have complained about the structure of Washington's Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)
It has been discovered that International Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch wrote to her US counterpart Katherine Tai to complain about the structure of the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

As part of the massive economic package put into law in August, Mr. Biden has committed $369 billion over the next decade to energy security and climate change programs.

This consists of tax incentives, grants, and loan guarantees, but the legislation has angered other nations.

EU and South Korea have also asserted that the IRA package could violate WTO regulations and unjustly damage their industries in competition with US rivals.

Ms. Badenoch has added the United Kingdom to the list of nations concerned about the global implications of Mr. Biden’s activities.US President Joe Biden signed the $369billion package of green subsidies into law in August, but has been hit by an international backlash

International Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch has reportedly protested about the structure of the Inflation Reduction Act of Washington (IRA)

In August, US President Joe Biden signed into law a $369 billion package of green subsidies, but has since been met with international opposition.

Ms Badenoch stated in a letter to Ms Tai, which was seen by the Financial Times, that the US plan would “hurt many economies around the globe and damage global supply chains for batteries, electric vehicles, and other renewables.”

Much of the worldwide worry regarding the impact of the IRA has centered on a provision limiting a $7,500 tax credit for the purchase of electric vehicles to those built in North America.

This was intended in part to wean the United States off of Chinese-made batteries, but has caused alarm among nations without a free trade agreement with the United States, such as the European Union and the United Kingdom.

The EU has already demanded modifications to the package to replicate the exemptions already granted to Canada and Mexico, and Brussels officials are currently in discussions with their American counterparts.

And Ms. Badenoch made it plain that the United Kingdom should also receive a special deal.

“As the closest of US allies, the United Kingdom expects to be a part of any flexibility in IRA implementation,” she continued.

As President Biden has made clear, the United States is listening to the concerns of our allies and partners over the IRA, and we are committed to working together to find a positive path ahead

  • Kroonstad taps in the Free State have been running dry for weeks

Kroonstad, in the Free State, is without water due to loadshedding. Residents can no longer do even the most fundamental daily tasks due to a lack of water.

Since the water conflict began roughly a month ago, residents have been left without direction.

A resident in Kroonstad, Patricia Morake, said: “I live at number 7980 Kroonstad, Free state. I am 69 years old and have been adversely impacted by the municipal water scarcity in Moqhaka.

“The water has been fully shut off for two weeks and counting, and the community has received no adequate notification. We were informed that a water truck would deliver water, however this is inconsistent and not always the case.

“It is difficult to cook, bathe, and use the restroom, which are fundamental needs. When you’re without water for one or two days, it’s an annoyance, but when you’re without water for so long, it gets challenging.

“We are old and some of us are sick, and we must travel far to gather water. I don’t know how I would have survived if my children hadn’t visited me and helped me gather water; otherwise, I don’t know how I would have survived. We constantly refill five-litre bottles and pails that are depleted in less than a day.

“The most infuriating aspect is that we do not know when the water will be restored or what caused it. “I truly do not know.”

Dika Kheswa, a municipal spokesperson, stated that the municipality has despatched ten water trucks to Maokeng (Kroonstad township) and would add four more trucks on Thursday. Each ward will also receive a water truck for funerals and healthcare facilities, he says, as the municipality works to expand Maokeng’s water storage capacity by repairing reservoirs.

“The technical operation of the reservoir will undergo a trial run on Thursday. Therefore, residents are encouraged to contact their particular councillors, as they will be in charge of these water trucks,” Kheswa explained.

In the meantime, Kheswa has apologized to residents for the inconvenience and indicated that the municipality is working around the clock to restore water service.

  • Postponement of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival 2023

Friday, the organizers of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival announced that the event, originally slated for 17 and 18 March 2023, had been delayed by nearly a year.

It is now set for February 23 and 24, 2024.

According to the organizers, a succession of unavoidable delays and unanticipated obstacles, as well as uncertainty about the future of load shedding, significantly hampered the planning for 2023.

espAfrika stated that rescheduling the 21st festival celebration was preferable.

“espAfrika apologizes unreservedly to all affected artists, fans, ticket purchasers, suppliers, and partners. It was not an easy choice, but it was the correct one.”

The message reads, “Please be advised that no funds from the sale of tickets to date have been transferred to the organizers, since they vest with Ticketmaster. Therefore, the refund procedure must be conducted via Ticketmaster and not by espAfrika.”
