  • Pope Francis to Roman Curia: Be vigilant against ‘the evil that quietly lurks among us’

    Rome Newsroom, Dec 22, 2022 / 04:53 am (CNA).

Pope Francis warned the Roman Curia on Thursday that they need to be vigilant in the face of temptation by “elegant demons”  and “the evil that quietly lurks among us.”

In his annual Christmas address to the cardinals who work in Vatican offices on Dec. 22, the pope said that there is a temptation for those who serve“at the heart of the Church” to think that they are “better than others, no longer in need of conversion.”

“Yet we are in greater danger than all others, because we are beset by the ‘elegant demon,’ who does not make a loud entrance, but comes with flowers in his hand,” Pope Francis said.

The pope underlined that “it is not enough to condemn evil, including the evil that quietly lurks among us.”

“We need to respond by choosing to be converted,” he said.

“Mere condemnation can give the illusion that we have solved the problem, whereas what really counts is making the changes that will ensure that we no longer allow ourselves to be imprisoned by evil ways of thinking, which are often those of this world.”

Pope Francis added that one of the most helpful virtues to aid in temptation is “the virtue of vigilance.”

He said that evil can “change its tactics, to become more insidious, to find new disguises that will be hard for us to see through.”

Quoting Jesus’ words in the Gospel of Luke, the pope said that when an unclean spirit has gone out of a person the spirit returns and brings “seven other spirits more evil than itself.”

Pope Francis explained that “the tempter always comes back, and he comes back in disguise.”

“Our initial conversion follows a certain pattern: the evil that we acknowledge and try to uproot from our lives does indeed leave us, but we would be naïve to think that it will long be gone. In short order, it comes back under a new guise. Before it appeared rough and violent, now it shows up as elegant and refined,” he said.

“Permit me to use the expression … these ‘elegant demons’ … enter smoothly, without our even being conscious of them. Only the daily practice of the examination of conscience can enable us to be aware of them,” the pope added.

Pope Francis has often used his annual December address, held in the Vatican’s gilded Hall of Benediction, to offer his frank perspective on the state of the Roman Curia.

In 2014, he famously diagnosed 15 spiritual “diseases” afflicting the Curia, including careerism and idolizing superiors. In 2020, the pope used the word “crisis” 44 times in his speech and called the Church to renewal.

In his 2022 Christmas greetings, Pope Francis returned to the theme of “conversion” again and again, including in reference to the recent 60th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council.

“What was the Council if not a great moment of conversion for the entire Church? As Saint John  XXIII observed: ‘The Gospel does not change; it is we who begin to understand it more fully.’ The conversion that the Council sparked was an effort to understand the Gospel more fully and to make it relevant, living and effective in our time,” he said.

Pope Francis added that “the error of trying to crystallize the message of Jesus in a single,  perennially valid form” is contrary to conversion.

“True heresy consists not only in preaching another gospel (cf. Gal 1:9), as Saint Paul told us, but also in ceasing to translate its message into today’s language and ways of thinking, which is precisely what the Apostle of the Gentiles did,” he said.

“To preserve means to keep alive and not to imprison the message of Christ.”

The pope also highlighted the plight of “war-torn Ukraine” and the many ongoing conflicts in different parts of the world.

“Anguished as we are by the spread of wars  and violence, we can and must make our own contribution to peace by striving to uproot from our hearts all hatred and resentment towards the brothers and sisters with whom we live,” he said.

Following his custom, Pope Francis gave Vatican officials books as a gift, including “The Life of Jesus,” written by Andrea Tornielli, the editorial director for the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication.

The pope’s speech to the Roman Curia and his following Christmas greetings to employees of Vatican City State were the last audiences on his public schedule before he is scheduled to preside over “Midnight Mass” at 7:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve in St. Peter’s Basilica.

“God became a Child, and that Child, once grown, let himself be nailed on a cross. There is nothing weaker than one who is crucified, yet that weakness became the demonstration of God’s supreme power. In forgiveness, God’s power is always at work. May gratitude, conversion, and peace thus be the gifts of this Christmas,” Pope Francis said.

  • Department of Defence and Military Veterans Deputy Minister says the disbursement of the Military Veterans pension will start early next year

Thabang Makwetla, Deputy Minister of the Department of Defence and Military Veterans, said that the processing of the payment of the Military Veterans pension benefit would begin early next year.

On Thursday, Makwetla was speaking at a media briefing in Pretoria.

“The process to roll out the pension pay-out will commence after the lapse of the 30 days tabling in Parliament. The department will in the meantime take in applications and process them accordingly through the government pension processes and system,” he said.

Makwetla noted that administrative procedures slowed the execution of the decision to pay pension benefits to personnel of the non-statutory forces.

It was already stated that pension payments will commence on December 1st.

“[In] the process of the implementation of this decision we were confronted with unavoidable administrative processes which resulted in the delay in the payment of the pension benefits. One of these was the requirement that the Draft Pension Regulations and the Pension Benefit Access form should be tabled in Parliament.

“These were tabled in Parliament early in December 2022. This will in turn legalise the operationalisation of the pension pay-out to military veterans,” he said.

The Deputy Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to provide pension benefits to liberation army veterans.

He noted that the department is “working around the clock” to expedite the distribution of the pension benefit.

“We want to reassure the community of military veterans and reiterate to them that the Government remains fully committed to the provision of the pension benefit to military veterans and has begun the necessary administrative processes.

“Government is fully conscious and aware of the financial challenges facing military veterans particularly in the current difficult economic times, characterised by poor economic growth, joblessness and persistent poverty,” he said.

In order to prevent any delays, Makwetla recommended that all veterans register with the department.

“A fully completed Military Veterans Pension benefit application form should be accompanied by an identity document and certified birth/marriage/partnership certificate and service certificate clearly indicating the force number.

“Military veterans are urged to apply in person or through registered post. The correct address must be specified on the appropriate form, which can be found on the DMV website and provincial offices,” he said.

Nevertheless, Makwetla has stated that military veterans would now be eligible for the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant.

“The Presidential Task Team (PTT) has taken a decision that military veterans should be paid the Social Relief of Distress support amount of R1250.00 per month to augment their pension pay-out during the current challenging economic situation.

“This will be a significant improvement on the previous R350.00 social relief support paid to veterans. The department should find alternative ways to implement such support in an effective and equitable manner to ensure that all those eligible do benefit,” he said.

  • Read Joe Biden’s Full Message to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Franco Harris’ Family on His Death

Franco Harris, a Hall of Fame running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers, passed away on Wednesday. A few days before the 50th anniversary of the “Immaculate Reception,” he passed away.

Many refer to the play known as the Immaculate Reception as one of the greatest in National Football League history (NFL).

Joe Biden issued a statement from the White House lamenting the passing of Franco Harris and extending his condolences to his wife, family, and the Pittsburgh Steelers organization. View his complete message below:

“When most people hear the name Franco Harris, they think of the catch, the Super Bowls, and the glory he brought to the sport of football. In contrast, throughout our fifty-year friendship, I frequently praised his integrity and kindness.

In 1968, the Pittsburgh Steelers had recently won their first division title following a strong regular season. They celebrated Christmas just days after defeating the Oakland Raiders on one of the most memorable plays in NFL history, rookie running back Franco Harris’s last-second Immaculate Reception. Franco led the Steelers to four Super Bowl championships in six years as the best team of the 1970s, despite the Steelers narrowly losing the conference championship game to the unbeaten Miami Dolphins.

But that’s not why I hold the Pittsburgh Steelers and Franco so dear.

In this week fifty years ago, my first wife and baby daughter were murdered in a vehicle accident as they were out getting a Christmas tree, together with my two young kids. I had just been elected to the U.S. Senate and was in Washington, D.C., when I received the phone call, prompting me to rush back to Delaware.

I hardly left their bedside till they recovered. However, I eventually went shopping for them. They were smiling for the first time since the accident when I returned. The Steelers’ generous and reputable owner, Art Rooney, had flown out with a few players, including Franco and the tenacious Rocky Bleier. Busy with their own lives, they took the time to sign footballs for my sons and go without any fanfare. A simple gesture of generosity that meant everything to us.

Sports are really effective in bringing people together. This weekend, as families gather for Christmas, there will be countless Pittsburgh Steeler and Penn State supporters telling their children and grandchildren about Franco’s prowess on the field. But I also know that there will be numerous families like mine who will remember him for what he did to elevate our spirits when we needed it most — in the most subtle, personal, and American ways. We do not need to inquire. We turn up. We extend a hand out. Our shared compassion is the wellspring of our nation’s enduring strength.

I last saw Franco in September and November of 2020 in Latrobe and Pittsburgh while he was campaigning. This week, more than any other, my family remembers him and maintains him in our hearts.

God bless you Franco Harris is a close friend, a wonderful man, and a distinguished American.

May God bless his life partner Dana, their family, and the entire Steeler Nation.”

The Sporting News named Franco Harris the NFL Rookie of the Year, and the Associated Press named him the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Over a decade, he was selected for nine consecutive Pro Bowls and won four Super Bowls. He also won Super Bowl IX Most Valuable Player and his team’s first championship. Additionally, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame the first year he was eligible.

  • Momentaneously, Republicans Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert refuse to applaud Zelensky standing ovation

depicts the moment when two Republicans refuse to join the standing ovation for Zelensky following his passionate speech before Congress and instead demand a probe into the £50 billion in aid sent to Ukraine to help it fight Putin.Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert remained seated as Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky gave his address to Congress on Wednesday evening

Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert remained sitting during Volodymyr Zelensky’s address to Congress on Wednesday evening during his brief visit to Washington, DC.

Zelensky spoke for about a quarter-hour, praising Americans and requesting their continuing support in the future while stressing that his country is “alive and flourishing.”

The speech occurred at a time when the House and Senate are on the cusp of approving an additional $45 billion in aid – after providing $50 billion this year to assist in the battle with Russia.

Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert remained sitting Wednesday evening while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed Congress.

Zelensky spoke for almost half an hour, thanking Americans and asking for their continued support in the future, while insisting his country is 'alive and well'

Zelensky stated that investments in Ukraine were “investments in global security and democracy” and that “the Russian dictator has lost control over us,” which was met with applause from both Republicans and Democrats.

Representatives even unfurled a Ukrainian flag on the House floor.

Boebert and Gaetz, however, did not stand and applaud while using their phones, and Gaetz even appeared to snicker.

Representatives from Colorado and Florida oppose more assistance to Ukraine and have sought a review of the $50 billion already sent to the country.

They later justified their choice on Twitter.

Boebert urged a ‘comprehensive probe’ of U.S. assistance to Ukraine and stated that she’really wished’ the funds would be used to ‘defend the southern border’

Boebert and Gaetz did not clap or stand while using their mobile devices, and Gaetz appeared to smirk.

Zelensky spoke for about a quarter of an hour, praising Americans and requesting their continuing support in the future while stressing that his country is “alive and flourishing.”

She stated in a video: “The Ukrainian people are suffering.” The war is lethal and horrifying, and the slaughter has not yet ceased.

“Unfortunately, I did not hear a clear explanation of where the $50 billion we sent to support their work went tonight.

I will not support sending further funds to this conflict until Congress receives a complete audit of where our money has already been spent.

President Zelensky is working to safeguard his nation, its borders, and its citizens. I got it.

I truly hope our commander-in-chief would secure our southern border and defend our people at home as he does abroad.

Gaetz added that investing in Ukraine rather than the United States was the essence of “America Last.”

In a tweet, he stated, ‘President Zelenskyy should be commended for putting his country first, but American politicians who comply with his demands are unwilling to do the same for ours.

“America Last is defined by hemorrhaging billions of taxpayer cash to Ukraine when our country is in crisis.”

He did not sway my decision to withhold aid to Ukraine and investigate fraud in already-completed transfers.

According to the German research organization Kiel Institute for the World Economy, the Biden administration delivered approximately $50 billion in humanitarian, financial, and military assistance to Ukraine in 2022.

  • Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel says he has forged a new coalition

Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu declared late on Wednesday that he had successfully created a new coalition, paving the way for his return to power as the leader of the most conservative Israeli government ever to hold office.

Netanyahu made the statement over the phone to President Isaac Herzog just minutes before the deadline at midnight. His Likud Party posted a short video of Netanyahu smiling and an audio recording of the chat.

Netanyahu stated, “I am pleased to inform you that, thanks to the overwhelming public support we obtained in the elections, I have been able to build a government that will care for all Israeli residents.”

The action followed weeks of unexpectedly difficult discussions with his partners, who must still ratify their power-sharing agreements with Netanyahu’s Likud Party. Netanyahu stated, though, that he hopes to conclude the process “as soon as feasible next week.” A date for its inauguration was not given immediately.

Netanyahu confronts a challenging assignment, even if he is successful. He will lead a coalition dominated by far-right and ultra-Orthodox partners pushing for dramatic changes that could alienate large portions of the Israeli public, increase the risk of conflict with the Palestinians, and put Israel on a collision course with some of its closest allies, including the United States and the Jewish American community.

Netanyahu has already secured agreements with a number of the most problematic political personalities in Israel.

Itamar Ben-Gvir, who was previously convicted of racist incitement and aiding a terrorist group, has been appointed security minister, a new job that would put him in charge of the national police force.

Bezalel Smotrich, his running mate and a West Bank settler leader who believes Israel should seize the occupied territory, will also serve as finance minister and have broad responsibility over West Bank settlement expansion.

Avi Maoz, the leader of a minor anti-LGBTQ religious group, has been placed in charge of portions of the country’s public education system. Maoz, who is openly antagonistic to the prevalent liberal streams of Judaism in the United States, has also been nominated as the deputy minister in charge of “Jewish identity.”

Netanyahu and his allies won a majority of 64 seats in the 120-member Knesset in the November 1 election, and he vowed to immediately form a government. However, this procedure proved to be more difficult than anticipated, in part because his ultra-Orthodox and far-right allies requested assurances over the scope of their authority.

Before the cabinet is sworn in, Netanyahu will attempt to pass a series of measures expanding Ben-authority Gvir’s over the police and creating a new ministerial position providing Smotrich duties in the West Bank previously held by the defense minister.

Aryeh Deri, a seasoned politician who once served time in prison for bribery, will attempt to pass legislation allowing him to continue as a government minister while he is on probation for a tax-related conviction from earlier this year.

In the meantime, the ultra-Orthodox are requesting increased financing for their independent school system, which has been heavily criticized for emphasizing religious subjects while giving its pupils with few employability skills.

Netanyahu granted many plumbing jobs to his coalition allies, causing Likud legislators to compete for a dwindling number of assignments.

Netanyahu, who is now on trial for suspected corruption, is ready to return to office after serving as opposition leader for the past year. It is anticipated that he and his allies will pass a series of reforms that would shake up the country’s judicial system and could free Netanyahu of all allegations.

Netanyahu served as Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, holding the position for a total of 15 years prior to his resignation last year. He asserts that he is the victim of overzealous police, prosecutors, and courts. Critics, however, argue that the measures, including an expected proposal that would allow the legislature to overrule Supreme Court decisions, will undermine the country’s democratic institutions and system of checks and balances.

Netanyahu has attempted to present himself as the responsible adult in the incoming government, claiming in interviews that he will establish policy. However, his partners are sure to test him at every opportunity.

Ben-Gvir, who is notorious for his anti-Arab rhetoric and provocative actions, such as displaying a pistol in a violent Palestinian neighborhood, has asked for a relaxation of the rules of engagement that prohibit security forces from shooting at suspected Palestinian attackers. In addition, he wishes to provide military immunity from prosecution in such situations.

Additionally, he desires to relax limits on Jewish visits to Jerusalem’s most sensitive holy site, a hilltop compound cherished by Jews and Muslims. In the past, even the tiniest adjustments at the site have triggered violent conflicts, and Ben-plans Gvir’s have already prompted warnings from the Hamas militant organization in the Gaza Strip.

Plans by Smotrich to accelerate West Bank settlement development and legitimize hundreds of illegally constructed outposts may also exacerbate relations with Palestinians and the international community. The hostility of his partners toward the Reform and Conservative streams of Judaism has irritated Jewish American organizations.

Netanyahu’s anticipated concessions to the ultra-Orthodox and ambitions to restructure the country’s judicial system may enrage many members of the secular middle class at home. Dozens of high-tech executives signed a petition last week expressing concern that the ideas could deter investors, and protests against the impending coalition have already begun.

Both the United States and the European Union have stated that they will evaluate the new government based on its programs, not its individuals. In a recent address, however, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken made it clear that he expects Israel to preserve “shared principles” and refrain from measures that could impede the creation of a Palestinian state.

Yohanan Plesner, a former member of the Knesset and the current president of the Israel Democracy Institute, a Jerusalem-based think tank, stated that he anticipates the formation of a solid coalition in the coming days.

“It is in the best interest of all coalition members to create this government,” he stated. Everyone has much to gain and much to lose if it does not form.

During tensions in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, Palestinian doctors said that Israeli soldiers shot and killed a 23-year-old man and wounded five others.

Ahmed Daraghmeh was fatally injured as Palestinian terrorists traded gunfire with Israeli troops who had infiltrated the Palestinian city of Nablus to accompany Jewish pilgrims to the biblical Joseph’s Tomb.

In amateur recordings that Palestinians recorded from their windows, shooting could be heard.

Daraghmeh came from the nearby town of Tubas, where he played soccer for the local team. It was unclear whether he participated in the conflict.

According to the Israeli military, soldiers escorted Israeli people to the holy site, while Palestinians “threw explosive devices and opened fire on the soldiers,” to which the Israelis reacted with live fire. It was reported that soldiers confirmed shooting a Palestinian.

According to government statistics, 150 Palestinians and 31 Israelis have been killed in Israeli-Palestinian combat in the West Bank and east Jerusalem this year, making 2022 the bloodiest year since 2006.

According to Israel, the majority of Palestinians slain were terrorists, but several stone-throwing adolescents and individuals not involved in the rioting were also killed.

  • Mntambo is optimistic ahead of January’s heavy PSL schedule

With eight days remaining until the DStv Premiership begins, Sekhukhune United skipper Linda Mntambo is optimistic that his team is prepared for the hectic January schedule.

The former Orlando Pirates midfielder stated that they are eagerly anticipating the resumption of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and are prepared for the upcoming hectic schedule.

“It’s nothing new, we are prepared for the back-to-back games that will occur in January,” Mntambo said. “If you look at how the season began, we were playing back-to-back games every other day, so it’s nothing new, something that we are used to.”

“During the Fifa World Cup break, we’ve been playing back-to-back friendlies to gauge our fitness level under our new coach, Brandon Truter. We are also becoming familiar with his playing style and game plan, and I believe we are almost ready to play our first game against Amazulu.”

Last Tuesday, Babina Noko strengthened their roster by signing defenders Mzwanele Mahashe and Philani Zulu.

Truter will attempt to make a statement when he faces his previous team after being fired from Usuthu due to a bad run of form.

On December 31, Sekhukhune will host AmaZulu at the Peter Mokaba Stadium to resume league play.
