  • Banner day honoring Ukraine hero Zelensky in DC

The day closed with flags for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington, DC.

He brought to the Wednesday evening Joint Session of Congress he addressed a battle flag he had recovered in Bakhmut, the most recent and most devastated target of Russian military assault.

At the conclusion of his speech, he passed the flag to Nancy Pelosi and Kamala Harris, who were seated directly behind him in their respective seats as speaker of the House and president of the Senate.

Two minutes later, Pelosi presented him with the flag that had been flown over the Capitol in his honor. She stated that someone will execute the task for him. “I can take,” Zelensky answered.

So you may refer to it as stagy. It can be called theater. You may frame it negatively if you so wish. Go ahead. It is a free nation. Be a jerk. Be a figure that history will only cite to ridicule your nihilistic cynicism. It is your discretion.

The flag exchange was an unexpectedly beautiful moment in time. And it was the culmination of a beautiful, unexpected, and crucial struggle.

Zelensky traveled to Washington in order to fulfill three tasks, all of which he accomplished brilliantly.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi presents President Zelensky with an American flag on December 21, 2022 in Washington, D.C.

Initially, he desired to demonstrate to the world and Vladimir Putin that he, as the embodiment of his courageous and exciting nation, is not only surviving but also had the fighting spirit, toughness, and charisma of a world-historic victor.

Second, as he told Congress, he intended to argue that backing for Ukraine is not “charity.” It constitutes an investment.

    SIPA

He like to conclude by expressing gratitude to the United States for its global leadership in supporting the Ukrainian cause. And not just because it has saved and will continue to save his country and millions who may perish in the conflict.

    A United States cause

It is not solely because he knows he will return to the well to seek additional assistance to defeat Putin. A Ukrainian victory over Putin’s aggression should also be considered an American cause since it will increase American security.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began 300 days prior to Zelensky’s arrival in our nation’s capital, stunned the world, which had assumed Russia could not be denied its prize once it had captured it.

21 December 2022, in Washington, D.C., President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine meets with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Vice President Kamala Harris.

But when Zelensky remained in Kiev and did not evacuate, and when the Ukrainians fought back with stunning vigor, and when the Russian tanks began to sink in the mud — all of which occurred within the first week — it became evident that this was a world-changing event.

The despot who began the most brazen act of military criminality in decades was not going to have it easy. It was supposed to be something different.

Three hundred days later, as was true on the first day, the Ukrainian people are exhibiting the most courageous resistance to tyranny and aggression we have seen in our lifetimes in response to the horrors Putin is inflicting upon them.

A staff member raises a Ukrainian flag as Nancy Pelosi leaves a joint meeting of Congress in the House Chamber of the United States Capitol on December 21, 2022 in Washington, DC.

We are not constrained by circumstance to watch helplessly while the dictators smash the heroes, as we were in the past. We have been given the opportunity to contribute to the heroism and assist in achieving the result that the world requires.

Zelensky came to thank us, and he did so correctly. Permit me to simply respond: Right back at you.

  • 24 hours after ambulance strike, hospitals brace for chaos today

As a result of yesterday’s ambulance strikes, it is feared that patients will swarm emergency rooms (A&E) today, resulting in hospital overcrowding on Christmas.

Ambulances parked outside the West Midlands Ambulance Service headquarters in Coventry, as paramedics, ambulance technicians and call handlers walk out in England and Wales yesterday. NHS trusts fear a bounceback today as patients delayed treatment

After a precipitous decline in 999 calls in many locations, health officials have predicted an imminent resurgence in calls.

They anticipate an increase in demand beginning today, when patients who waited throughout the ambulance strike seek treatment. Those who did make it to A&E grumbled about the inconvenience caused by the protest, and home deliveries were canceled in the event of problems.

Up to 10,000 ambulance personnel, including paramedics, technicians, and call handlers, participated in strike action at ten of England and Wales’ eleven ambulance trusts.

Ambulance workers take part in a strike, amid a dispute with the government over pay, outside NHS London Ambulance Service in London

Yesterday, paramedics, ambulance technicians, and call handlers across England and Wales walked out in front of the West Midlands Ambulance Service headquarters in Coventry. NHS trusts today fear a rebound as people delay treatment.

Outside NHS London Ambulance Service in London, ambulance personnel participate in a strike over a pay dispute with the government.

Yesterday, ambulance services reached more than half of the United Kingdom.Ambulance services hit more that half the UK yesterday

According to ambulance trusts, 999 calls were lower than usual, raising concerns that patients delayed seeking help and will be sicker today and tomorrow when they clog phone lines and A&E facilities.

More strike mayhem TODAY, National Highways employees will be on holiday for four days, while 20 million drivers will embark on the “worst Christmas vacation ever.”

The United Kingdom is prepared for yet another day of strike upheaval as National Highway employees are the next to walk off the job, following a week of disruptions that have seen thousands of paramedics and nurses walk off the job.

Due to strikes by the train and National Highway unions, it will be difficult for Britons returning home for Christmas to travel by road or rail beginning on Friday. Additionally, border force employees will also go on strike.

From 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve to 6 a.m. on the 27th of December, there will be yet another countrywide rail strike.

The industrial action will cause chaos for individuals traveling across the United Kingdom to visit family for the Christmas.

It follows a week in which nurses and paramedics walked off the job in a dispute over wages, placing additional burden on an already beleaguered NHS.

Critics have asserted that the action will jeopardize lives, but Unison, the union representing the striking ambulance workers, stated that the NHS has long-standing problems unrelated to the strike and that it was the government’s responsibility to begin negotiations.

Additionally, NHS leaders and unions have assured the public that the strikes will not affect life-saving services.

During the paramedics’ strike, people have been encouraged to only dial 999 for an ambulance if the situation is life-threatening, while some families are compelled to drive their loved ones to A&E.

In the latest phase of industrial action by the United Kingdom’s largest civil service union, National Highways employees will strike from tonight until Christmas Day.

North East Ambulance Service chief operating officer Stephen Segasby issued a stern warning, advising patients to question themselves, “Am I going to die?” Do I feel like I’m going to die’ before seeking medical treatment.

West Midlands Ambulance Service reported a 70% decline in calls, while south-west England saw a 33% decline in usual call numbers.

The chief executive officer of the Welsh Ambulance Service, Jason Killens, stated that yesterday was “noticeably quieter.”

The number of calls to the 111 non-emergency line increased by 250 percent in the South West. GPs received an increase in calls.

Experts in the field of health cautioned, however, that sick individuals may be delaying care, resulting in a similar backlog of health issues as after the lockdowns.

This not only jeopardizes their health but also stores up difficulty for the upcoming days, when the ambulance team will resume routine operations.

As elective surgeries and outpatient appointments are rescheduled, there will be a ripple effect in other areas of the health system.

Dr. Adrian Boyle, president of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, stated, “We are particularly concerned about a rebound impact, which suggests that things could become far worse in the coming days.”

The temporary chief executive officer of NHS Providers, Saffron Cordery, stated, “The disruption is far from done.” As a result of the knock-on effect throughout all sectors of the health and care system, the need to reschedule elective and outpatient appointments, and the anticipated return of very high numbers of emergency calls, the fallout from strike action is expected to continue into the following days.

“Patients who may have delayed seeking treatment and whose health have deteriorated are of special concern now that they are presenting for therapy,”

Many made their own way to the hospital to avoid lengthy ambulance wait times.

Lee Tucker, age 57, took a day off work to transport his elderly mother-in-law to A&E at Queen’s Medical Hospital (QMH) in Nottingham after she fractured her leg in a fall.

He stated, “I’ll always go out of my way to help my family, but I’ve missed a key meeting because I had to leave the workplace for the day.”

Sarah Chaplin, 47, who took a taxi to the same hospital with her aunt who had fractured her wrist, said, ‘The taxi fares would cost us £20, which is a burden we could have done without so close to the holidays.

I believe that because ambulances are so vital to sick patients, their drivers should not be permitted to go on strike.

As anxious members of the public called to arrange rides to the hospital, taxi drivers around the nation enjoyed a lucrative day.

By lunchtime, Paul Harris had already dropped off four individuals at QMH.

He stated, “Some of them had difficulty breathing.” It is unfair that elderly individuals who have paid taxes their entire lives must pay for transportation to the hospital.

A woman in Newcastle-upon-Tyne who need treatment for an eating disorder was driven to Royal Victoria Infirmary by a friend. Cheryl, a woman in her thirties, remarked, ‘It was all quite inconvenient, and I can see why some people find it reprehensible.’

A resourceful senior citizen contacted her caregivers for assistance after she tripped and fell.

Margaret, 77, from Orpington, reported to BBC Radio 5 Live, “In the past, I’ve called an ambulance, but this morning I called my caregivers and they arrived within minutes.” They have already instructed you to call our office if you cannot return to bed tonight if you are unable to sleep.

The aspirations of expectant moms planning home births were crushed when warnings were issued and services were discontinued.

In west London, Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust informed expectant mothers, “There is no guarantee that an ambulance or paramedic would come to your home to assist you during labor or in an emergency.”

Please make sure you have transportation to the hospital, such as a car or taxi. The Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust “highly encouraged” giving delivery at its maternity department, adding that failure to do so “may jeopardize the safety of you and your baby.”

Because of the strike, the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust in London has suspended its home birth service.

Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley complained that nurses’ and then ambulance workers’ strikes were preventing police officers from safeguarding Londoners.

He told LBC’s Nick Ferrari, ‘The thing that worries me the most is that if we take on more mental health and other [social] activities, we stop responding to burglaries, stabbings, and other crimes.

I believe my officers will find it infuriating that they are filling in for striking public officials when they are not permitted to strike themselves. They have no desire to strike; they want to work and safeguard London.

  • Tennessee man accused of torching a Christmas tree containing gifts

This greedy Grinch attempted to set Christmas ablaze.

Sunday, a man from Tennessee, whose heart was likely two sizes too small, performed the role of festive villain by torching a family’s Christmas tree and a child’s gifts, according to officials.

James Walker, 25, allegedly stole belongings from an apartment and placed them in his car before callously tossing a child’s blanket over a tree and setting it on fire, according to a Facebook post by Dyersburg police.

According to police, responding officers observed that a window was opened to vent the fire and the home’s smoke detector was covered.

The victim wasn’t home when the fire broke out just after midnight, but she later told police that the suspect was a friend. According to investigators, the girl informed officers earlier that day that she and her brother were involved in an altercation with Walker.

Police officers apprehended Walker following a brief foot pursuit, according to authorities. He faces charges of aggravated burglary, aggravated arson, resisting arrest, and public intoxication, among others.

Through its outreach program, Dyersburg police also assist the aggrieved family by replacing the child’s ruined items and donating a few extra toys before Christmas, the department stated.

  • Joseph Evans, proprietor of a South Australian winery, powers his winery with his electric vehicle

Joseph Evans, owner of a vineyard, no longer complains about his electric cost.

The Ballycroft Vineyard in SA's Barossa Valley is powered by solar energy from a Nissan Leaf electric vehicle
The entrepreneur of Ballycroft Vineyard in South Australia’s Barossa Valley is the first person in the nation to use solar energy stored in his electric car to run his business.

And so far, the energy captured by his Nissan Leaf during the test has yielded a bountiful crop.

In the next weeks, the companies behind the innovative experiment will welcome additional electric vehicle owners to utilize the technology, a move that, according to industry experts, might result in lower power costs and strengthen Australia’s electricity system.

The Ballycroft Vineyard in South Australia’s Barossa Valley is powered by solar energy generated by an electric Nissan Leaf automobile.

Mr. Evans, an enthusiastic owner of a Nissan Leaf electric vehicle, enrolled in a trial conducted by the South Australian Power Network.

Even after the installation of solar panels, he reported that the winery’s electrical expenditures were still $2,000 per year.

Mr. Evans said, however, that by employing an electric car to store solar energy and power his business overnight, he was now earning money rather than spending it on electricity.

Mr Evans (pictured) is a passionate electric car owner, and signed up to a trial by the South Australian Power Network

He stated, “It is the holy grail of EV ownership.”

By returning a small amount of power to the grid, we earn approximately $3,000 annually.

We are entirely self-sufficient due to the fact that our solar panels run the pumps for the vineyard and the rainfall pumps for the house.

Mr. Evans stated that he delivered wine using his Nissan Leaf throughout the day, returned to charge its battery using solar panels around midday, and used it to power the vineyard overnight.Mr Evans and his wife (pictured) have owned the Ballycroft Vineyard for more than 25 years

Mr. Evans (shown) is an enthusiastic electric vehicle owner who enrolled in a South Australian Power Network study.

Mr. Evans and his wife (shown) have been the proprietors of the Ballycroft Vineyard for over 25 years.

A wall-mounted charger from the Victorian business JET Charge handled the flow of electricity into and out of the vehicle, and the company will begin accepting orders for the Wallbox Quasar hardware from South Australian residents by the end of January.

Tim Washington, founder of JET Charge, stated that the winery project was a fun way to demonstrate how vehicle-to-grid technology worked, but that when the technology becomes generally available, it might help many people reduce their electric bills.

‘It’s cool that it’s a winery, but it’s actually an example of how bi-directional charging will become so commonplace that we won’t need to consider it a project,’ he explained. The winery project shows how vehicle-to-grid technology works, and could soon be widely available to help households cut down power bills

You will plug your EV into the power source, and that’s about it. As a result of the low barrier to entry once all technical issues are resolved, the rate of adoption will be faster than anticipated.

The winery experiment demonstrates how vehicle-to-grid technology functions, and it may soon be widely available to assist families reduce their electricity costs.

In Australia, however, only the Nissan Leaf and the Mitsubishi plug-in hybrid support the technology at present.

Ben Warren, national manager of electrification for Nissan, stated that more automakers should promote the technology because vehicle batteries are designed to withstand “extreme” demands, whereas powering houses does not require the same “swings.”

“The benefit for the customer is a lower energy cost,” Mr. Warren explained.

‘For the grid, this is also a significant benefit.

‘All of a sudden, our cars have transformed from something that sits idle in our driveways to an integral part of our lives.’

  • Alaska archbishop condemns attacks on Catholic church

This photo shows the extent of the damage to St. Andrew Catholic Church. It has been edited to blur the spraypainted phallic images. / St. Andrew Catholic Church

    Washington D.C., Dec 21, 2022 / 16:00 pm (CNA).

Recent incidents of vandalism committed against a church in Alaska represent an “attack on the dignity of each person and their religious practice,” wrote Archbishop Andrew Bellisario of the Diocese of the Anchorage-Juneau in a letter to parishioners.

In his Dec. 9 letter, Bellisario called attention to two recent acts of vandalism that took place at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Eagle River.

“We do not know what has motivated people to do these serious and disturbing actions,” Bellisario wrote. “These are especially significant in the context of the many expressions of anger that have become so commonplace in our society, our political system, and even our Church. This must be called out for its attack on the dignity of each person and their religious practice.”

Last month vandals spray-painted profane images on the church walls and doors, according to a report by the Alaska Watchman. The images were identical to those painted on the church in May, two days after the Supreme Court’s leaked draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade went public. At that time vandals also scattered nails across the church’s parking lot.

Father Arthur Roraff, pastor of St. Andrew’s, told CNA that whoever committed these crimes is in need of help.

“It has been very disappointing that we have been the target of someone’s anger. There is obviously some frustration and sadness in someone’s life that they feel the desire to vent it on a church, the one place the exists for their healing. What they truly seek is in the church they desecrate,” Roraff said.

“While there is true sadness for the individual or individuals, we can never condone such actions. They should be brought to justice because it is often through justice that one finds contrition and forgiveness. We continue to cooperate with the police to find whoever is responsible for this,” he added.

CatholicVote reports that there have been over 250 attacks against Catholic churches in the U.S. since 2020. A large percentage of those attacks occurred this year, with at least 100 attacks being committed after the Supreme Court leak in May, according to CatholicVote.

In addition to the attack on St. Andrew’s, on June 2 a pro-life pregnancy center in Anchorage, Community Pregnancy Center, was vandalized with spray-painted pro-abortion messages, a door was broken, and upright nails were placed in the parking lot.

“The seasons of Advent and Christmas offer the chance to renew the love, respect, and friendship that bind us together,” Archbishop Bellisario noted in his letter.

“It is especially important for us to do this when these bonds are challenged by those who would disrupt them and sow the division and hatred that Our Lord came to earth to heal,” he wrote.

“We, as Catholics,” Bellisario said, “must do what we can to promote peace and respect and restore the trust and security upon which healthy human relationships depend.”

Bellisario called on Christians to “pray for all this Advent and Christmas season, especially those who find themselves consumed with feelings of hopelessness, despair, and paralyzing anger.”

The bishop also noted that the archdiocese will be taking steps to increase security.

“In these measures, and in any response to disruptive and violent actions that do take place, our ministers and staff members will cooperate fully with law enforcement authorities, seeking their immediate and sustained intervention and assisting in any criminal investigations,” Bellisario wrote.

  • With Zelenskyy in the U.S., faith leaders sign petition calling for a ‘Christmas truce’

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky receives from U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) (L) a US national flag during his address to the U.S. Congress at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. on Dec. 21, 2022. / Mandel Ngan/AFP via Getty Images

    Washington D.C., Dec 21, 2022 / 16:20 pm (CNA).

As Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visits the United States, about 1,000 faith leaders, including some Catholics, are calling for a Christmas truce in his country.

Led by The Fellowship of Reconciliation-USA, the National Council of Elders, CODEPINK, and the Peace in Ukraine Coalition, the petition asks the Biden administration to push for a “negotiated settlement” to bring the war to an end.

The leaders, uniting across diverse faith backgrounds, state that the solution to the war waged by Russia is not a military one.

Together, they signed a statement reading: “As people of faith and conscience, believing in the sanctity of all life on this planet, we call for a Christmas Truce in Ukraine. In the spirit of the truce that occurred in 1914 during the First World War, we urge our government to take a leadership role in bringing the war in Ukraine to an end through supporting calls for a cease-fire and negotiated settlement, before the conflict results in a nuclear war that could devastate the world’s ecosystems and annihilate all of God’s creation.”

One of the initial signatories, Marie Dennis, serves as senior adviser of the Catholic Nonviolence Initiative Program at Pax Christi International, a group that works to promote peace, respect for human rights, and justice and reconciliation throughout the world.

“I signed the petition for a Christmas truce in Ukraine because I believe that the loss of life, the tremendous suffering in Ukraine and elsewhere, the ecological damage, the generational trauma caused by the Russian invasion and ongoing war, and the threatened use of a nuclear weapon are breaking the heart of a loving God,” Dennis told CNA.

“Pope Francis has repeatedly called for an end to the brutality, an end to the killing, a nonviolent resolution to this catastrophic war,” she added. “Perhaps a cease-fire will create space for negotiations that are the only route toward a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”

In an interview published in November, Pope Francis said that the Holy See is “willing to do everything possible to mediate and put an end to the conflict” in Ukraine. The 86-year-old pontiff has been an outspoken advocate for peace in Ukraine since Russia’s invasion of that country began.

“But everyone must commit to demilitarizing hearts, starting with their own, and then defusing, disarming violence. We must all be pacifists. Wanting peace, not just a truce that may only serve to rearm. Real peace, which is the fruit of dialogue,” the pope told the Italian newspaper La Stampa.

Most recently, on Wednesday, he spoke about Ukraine during his weekly catechetical series on discernment.

“Let us think of the Ukrainian people this Christmas, without electricity, without heating, without the main things necessary to survive, and let us pray to the Lord to bring them peace as soon as possible,” the pope said.

At the White House on Wednesday, Zelenskyy spoke during a joint press conference with U.S. President Joe Biden on the 300th day since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Russia needs to be held accountable for everything it does against us, against our people, against Europe, and the whole free world,” the president of Ukraine said. “And it is very important that we have the peace formula. And for that, we offer very specific steps [for] what America can do to help us to implement them. We propose [a] global formula for peace summit.”

Biden, a Catholic, recognized that they spoke on the fourth night of Hanukkah, or “a time when Jewish people around the world — President Zelenskyy and many of their families among them — honor the timeless miracle, the small band of warriors fighting for their values and their freedom against a much larger foe and how they endured and how they overcame.”

“How the flame of faith, with only enough oil for one day, burned brightly for eight days,” he added. “The story of survival and resilience that reminds us that the coldest days of the year, that light will always prevail over darkness and hope drives away despair.”

  • Zelenksy’s speech in Congress is acclaimed, and he is deemed to speak better English than Biden

Wednesday’s presentation by Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky to Congress was favorably welcomed by Americans on social media, with many commenting on how effectively he spoke English.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky's speech in Congress was well-received by many on Twitter, with some commenting on how his English may be better than Biden's
Some also compared the delivery of the non-native English speaker to that of their own president, Joe Biden.

The host of a podcast, Gerry Callahan, wrote, “He speaks English better than our president.” Additionally, Our Vice President. And our House Speaker,’ criticizing the oratory skills of Kamala Harris and Nancy Pelosi as well.

Many on Twitter praised Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky’s speech before Congress, with some remarking that his English may be better than Joe Biden’s.

Callahan also attacked Pennsylvania’s incoming senator, John Fetterman, implying that Zelensky’s military-inspired khaki gear was preferable to Fetterman’s infamously casual work clothes.

This month, Fetterman’s wife mocked The New York Times’ choice to name him one of the most stylish persons of 2022 and demanded a’recount.’

On Wednesday evening’s Tucker Carlson show, he stated that Zelenksy’s military attire made him look like a “manager of a strip club demanding money.”

On Tucker Carlson's show on Wednesday evening he said Zelenksy's wartime outfit made him look like the 'manager of a strip club demanding money'

CNN’s Global Affairs analyst praised the speech and considered how Putin may have perceived Zelenksy’s visit to Washington.

She stated, “There is no doubt that this speech, this venue, and this bipartisan applause irritate Putin. The chef’s smooch? That Zelensky is wonderfully expressing it in English.’

Regional Coordinator of Students for Life Kyle Poen shared a similar observation: “Zelensky, despite English not being his first language, is a stronger speaker than Biden.”

Dillon Thomas, a journalist for CBS, stated, “I know Americans who are paid to speak English on television every day and yet struggle.”
