  • Event attendees must be vaccinated to access venues in Edo State

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the government will, by mid-September 2020, enforce the directive on denial of access to large gatherings in public and private places in the state for persons who choose not to be inoculated with the COVID-19 vaccines.

Obaseki, who spoke to journalists in Benin City, said his administration remains committed to ensuring the health and safety of citizens and will explore every option available for the protection of the best interests of Edo people.

He noted that the government will proceed with the enforcement of the ‘no vaccination card, no access to large gatherings’ in the state, despite the order by a High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, directing the government to maintain the status quo on the purported ‘compulsory vaccination’ of its citizens with the COVID-19 vaccine.

He said: “We want to reiterate that our directives on vaccination stands and so people who are planning social, religious, political or business events after the second week of September should ensure that both themselves and their guests are not only vaccinated but possess vaccination cards as proof of vaccination, as anyone without this proof, will not be granted access to crowded facilities.

“We also want to stress that the government is commencing intensive enforcement of use of Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions (NPIs) to curb the current spike in COVID-19 infections and deaths.

These measures include compulsory wearing of facemasks, regular washing of hands under running water and/or use of hand sanitisers, and maintenance of recommended social and physical distancing in public places, among others.”

  • Open grazing ban to promote healthy living in Delta State

Delta State Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu on Thursday said the law to ban open grazing in the state would promote healthy and harmonious living among farmers and herders.

Speaking on ‘The Morning Show’ on Arise TV, Aniagwu said that the law was not targeted at any section of the society but to provide a healthy living among stakeholders in the farming and cattle rearing business.

He said that the constant clashes between farmers and herders in the country necessitated the call for legislation to ban open grazing especially in Southern Nigeria.

He blamed President Muhammadu Buhari for not providing adequate leadership in resolving the crisis adding that State House of Assembly had conducted Public hearing on the Bill before going on recess.

He added that the Bill would be passed as soon as the Assembly returns from their annual recess.

“Let’s take away the politics and the primordial sentiments from the crisis. I do not blame these individuals who are opposed to ban on open grazing.

“I blame the President because I assume that he should be able to understand. Those who advise him, have a clearer picture of what obtains in advanced societies.

“Subjecting the cattle to some form of unwarranted exercise is not healthy because the cattle are shedding weight and therefore not able to provide all the proteins we desire because they have been subjected to trekking thousands of kilometres.

“If you go to the state of Texas in the United States of America, the number of cattle they have in Texas alone is far in excess of what we have in the entire Nigeria yet you don’t see them roaming on the streets causing havoc.

“The crop is the source of livelihood of the farmer even as the cattle are also the source of livelihood of the herder.

“How do you strike a balance if the source of the livelihood of the herder now progresses to a level where it subjects the farmer to abject poverty on account of the regular trampling on the farms, produce and crops of this farmer which of course has been the centre of the clashes between these two very important sectors of our economy.

He said the President had not provided leadership in resolving the crisis adding that the proposed bill has a proposal for 5,000 hectares of land designated for a regulated or restricted grazing and ranching in every local government area

“Here in Delta, we are very determined to regulate it not for the purpose of only banning grazing in open areas but for the purpose of promoting healthy living between the owners of the livestock and of course those of us who are either into consumption, marketing, breeding or rearing.

“We are determined to regulate it for the purpose of promoting healthy living and we are very much convinced that when this is done, it will help our economy both in Delta and indeed that of the entire country,” the Commissioner stated.

  • YAGEPreneur Okafor Admonishes Delta Youths To Think Outside the Box To Survive

JOHN OKAFOR is the CEO of G.Husb Enterprise located at Ugbolu. He hails from Ika North East Local Government Area. He holds a BSC, MSC and is about to complete his PhD in Economics from the University of Benin.

He is a focused and enterprising young man who in spite of being a fulltime student gives time to running an integrated farm enterprise. He practices Poultry, Piggery and Crop Productions.

He enrolled in YAGEP as a brown beneficiary in the 2019/2020 Cycle and received support in Piggery. Beyond doubt, he is a goal-getter, worthy of emulation. His story.

“I received from the State Government ₦440,000.00 for 10 pigs, two soars and eight in-pigs and the sum of ₦200,000.00 for feeding and medication as the approved support package for Brown YAGEPreneurs in Piggery Production.

“Before the support, I had 30 pigs. One year after government’s intervention, I now have over 100 pigs in my pen. I sell pigs every two months. I want to maintain the number at 100 being the capacity of my pen and the number I can conveniently feed. With good management, the business can feed itself.

“The intervention fund was a big boost for expansion. It has yielded the desired result and I appreciate our Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa for the initiative. The programme should be sustained to encourage youths in agriculture to expand their farm enterprises. I rate YAGEP 70%.

“I encourage Delta youths to think outside the box within our environment to find needs they can provide and survive on.”

  • New York, New Jersey declare states of emergency as remnants of Hurricane Ida hit Northeast

NEW YORK, 2nd September, 2021 – New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency early Thursday about an hour after New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio declared one due to what he called “an historic weather event … with record breaking rain across the city, brutal flooding and dangerous conditions on our roads” as remnants of Hurricane Ida raced up the East Coast.
The downpours were being blamed for at least five deaths four in New York City and a 70-year-old man Passaic, New Jersey Mayor Hector Lora said was swept away by floodwaters. He said he had unconfirmed reports of additional deaths. Divers were searching for other possible victims of people who needed to be rescued.
Lora ordered the evacuation of residents in downtown Passaic due to concern about the rising level of the Passaic River and a high tide at around 5 a.m. De Blasio said approximately 5,300 customers were without power.
The band of severe weather also caused the FAA to issue a “ground stop” at all three New York City-area airports. New York City subways were shut and the Long Island Railroad suspended service.
The Hochul and de Blasio declarations came on the heels of the first flash flood emergency for parts of the city that the National Weather Service New York office ever issued. It included Manhattan, Brooklyn and the borough of Queens.
The New York office tweeted that the difference between a more common Flash Flood Warning and Flash Flood Emergency was that, “This was an exceedingly rare event with 6-10″ of rainfall falling over a several hour period. Take these warnings (and emergencies) seriously!! ”
The flash flood emergency for the city was itself only the second that the NWS New York office ever declared. The first came an hour earlier, for northern New Jersey. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency late Wednesday.
The NWS issued a flash flood emergency for parts of Connecticut as the front end of the system moved into New England.
