  • JAMB cancels general cutoff mark

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has now cancelled general cut-off marks for admission into tertiary institutions.

Instead, institutions can now set their own minimum scores for admission.

The decision was taken by the JAMB board at the 2021 policy meeting which held virtually and was chaired by the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu.

Speaking during the meeting, the Registrar of JAMB Prof. Is-haq Oloyede said some universities proposed different cutoff marks.

    Cutoff marks

The proposed cutoff marks and institutions are:

University of Maiduguri proposed 150, Usman Dan Fodio University Sokoto proposed 140, Pan Atlantic University proposed 210, University of Lagos 200, Lagos State University 190, Covenant University 190, Bayero University Kano 180.

Closure of amendment for 2021 admission

The stakeholders approved October 29, 2021, as the deadline for the closure of amendments for 2021 admissions. The stakeholders resolved to allow the ministry to decide as they could not agree on the December 31, 2021 deadline for all public institutions and January 31st 2022 for all public institutions.

    2021 admission guidelines

All the stakeholders adopted the 2021 admission guidelines, which states that all applications for part-time or full-time programmes for degrees, NCE, OND, and others must be posted only through JAMB.

The meeting approved that for Direct Entry, DE, the maximum score a candidate can present is 6 and the minimum is 2 or E, as required by law.

The candidate’s credentials must be uploaded on CAPS and recommended by the institution, JAMB approves and the candidate accepts the offer of admission.

If candidates have not accepted an offer, the institution can change the candidate after informing JAMB.

Also approved at the policy were the guidelines that every institution is at liberty to admit candidates based on its own minimum score approved by the institution and the policy meeting.

The meeting also resolved that every institution should maintain its own minimum score as approved by the policy meeting.

According to the stakeholders, the 2021 admissions will be conducted only through CAPS, no institution is allowed to admit candidates without uploading their details on CAPS.

Oloyede further disclosed that for the 2021/2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, the board is introducing two new subjects: computer studies and physical and health education, bringing to a total of 25 subjects.

The stakeholders also exempted prison inmates, visually impaired and foreign candidates from sitting for post UTME exercise.

Speaking on the 2020 admissions, Oloyede said out of the 956,809 admission spaces in the 962 higher education institutions in the country about 600,000 have so far been admitted.

While saying there are many admission spaces that have not been filled up in several courses due to lack of qualified candidates, Oloyede said private universities in the country were only able to admit 36,381 candidates out of the 120,938 slots available to them.

  • How to enable location safely on your phone

The security of our location is an issue that few of us know how to protect. We know that there are companies that can track our whereabouts through some applications that we install on our mobile. But we can put an end to that right now by adding some security checks around our locatio.

Almost all the procedures that we will do to protect the location on our smartphone is simple and fast to achieve. It is enough to enter the configuration of our mobile to do so.

But if you still don’t feel safe enough, you can still install an app that will not only hide your location, but won’t allow any of your online activities to be tracked.

    Control your location data

There are times when it is okay to allow an app to access your location, but there are times when it is not.
For example, when you are on the street and you need to find a place, it is okay to share your location with the map application to find your destination. The same if you need to give someone you trust your address.

A location service also becomes necessary when your mobile is lost and you have to find it. However, some of the applications we use request our location without a consistent reason.

This is why you must take control of your location data.

    Control location on Apple iOS

The Apple operating system offers different options for sharing your precise location with applications. But depending on the version installed on your mobile, the configuration will be a little different.

For example, in iOS 14 you are given 4 options to allow or not to share the location with an app:

    Never.
    Ask next time.
    While using the application.
    Always.

In iOS 13, it instead gives you the options:

    Allowing once.
    Do not allow.
    While using the application.

Some versions tell you when an app is using your location in the background and even tell you how many times an app has accessed your location. The important thing to maintain the security functions of iOS is that you keep all the updates up to date.

Another option is to disable shared location services for all applications. Although this is not ideal if you use apps like Google Maps. This can be done in Settings> Privacy> Location Services.

    Control location on Android

When we configure our Android we do it with a Google account, it saves our location and is designed to synchronize the browsing history with all our devices. This implies that if we have the option of sharing location enabled on all devices, not only will they know our whereabouts all the time, but even our habits and tastes.

Android gives us several options to modify how applications interact with our location. And to change the location permissions per application you must follow these steps:

Go to Settings on your smartphone.
Tap on the Location profile .
In Android, enter the application Permissions and if it is a Pixel mobile, tap on Access to the application’s location.
All applications have 3 categories to grant or deny them permissions:

    Allowed all the time.
    Allowed only while in use.
    Denied

Tap the app you want to change the location permission for.

You will see 3 options below to control the permission. Here’s a breakdown of what each one means.

Allowed all the time: Allow all the time / Allow only while using the app / Deny.
Allowed only while in use: Allow only while using the app / Deny.
Denied: Allow only while the application is in use / Deny if the setting is in “Allow all time” mode, that is, the application can persistently track your location even when it is not open.
The option to “Allow all the time” is useful for some applications that need to locate you while you do other things, such as Uber or Google Maps. If these applications are set to “Allow only while using the application”, only the active location will be when the application is open.

To completely disable location services for all applications, just press “Deny.”

Use a VPN program to protect your location

By now you know how to manage which applications can get your location. But they can still track it when you use the browsers. This is because an IP address is required to access information online and cannot be removed.

On the other hand, we can hide or mask the IP address. And one of the easiest ways to do it is by using a VPN or virtual private network.

A VPN can disguise your location by masquerading as another. This gives you a great security advantage. Since when sending and receiving data through public Wi-Fi they can perfectly track your information.

This private network masks your IP when you use one of its servers to connect to the network. These servers are located all over the world, so you can select a location and your IP will become that of that server.

This in addition to giving you security also allows you to skip limits imposed by websites or service providers in your country of origin. For example, you could watch Netflix content from another country that is not available in yours.

All VPNs are different, but most offer similar connection tools.

  • 4 technological tricks to boost your performance in video games

Only gamers can understand how frustrating technical problems encountered during a game can be. The performance of the set-up depends on many factors that in most cases have to do with the optimization and the network where you connect.

The launch of Red Dead Redemption 2 revealed the problem of game development in the saturation of the PC, generating a shower of criticism to NVIDIA for the poor reaction of its graphics cards in games that require technical specifications above normal.

Many of the technical problems present when playing have a relatively easy solution, which is why TDPel Media presents 4 technological tricks to boost your performance in video games from HDGamers.

    VPN improves gaming experience

It is clear to online gamers: there is nothing better than a stable connection with a low ping time. The advantages of using VPN with the PlayStation 5 , and on other consoles such as Xbox or Nintendo Switch, is that it provides a seamless connection, since it allows you to connect to different servers, many of which are close to those of the game.

Furthermore, its use is linked to other technological benefits, including:
    Reducing game latency.
Change geographic location to take advantage of releases from other regions or connect to IP-blocked servers.
Protect personal data and ensure our privacy online.
Protect yourself from a possible DDoS attack.

Perform periodic maintenance on your PC

This step is often forgotten even by veteran players. Dust that accumulates in the vent portion then advances to components over time, leading to obsolete thermal paste and permanent damage to the interior of the CPU. This situation slows down the maximum power that our operating system can provide.

To solve this problem, follow the following recommendations:

Carry out a deep cleaning of the equipment, especially in the refrigeration area.
    Update installed drivers.
    Change the thermal paste periodically.

Free up space and configure the operating system correctly

The consumption of resources in areas other than gaming can affect the performance of our CPU, especially if we have limited specifications.

The steps to follow are those:

Configure power saving so as not to limit the performance of the components.
Free up resources and close applications that are running in the background.

Configure the graphical settings of each game

Not all games have the same development process, so their operation varies on the computer where it is installed. What can be done to solve this detail is to complete the following steps in the configuration of each game:

    Set the resolution to 100%.
In the textures section, raise it to the maximum or medium level, a low level will ruin the experience.
Don’t remove shadows from the game.
We hope that this short guide has been helpful for you and that you have learned some tricks to improve the performance of your video games.

  • What is a 3D printer and what is it for?

The latest technology no longer belongs exclusively to large corporations, the most advanced laboratories or the armies as was customary in the last century. The democratization of technologies is a reality today. Devices as revolutionary as a 3D printer can be purchased by anyone to physically create their own designs.

The Internet and the productive capacity that humanity sustains at this time has allowed the concept of technological democratization to develop , which means that most people have access to technologies shortly after they are created. A fact that was not the norm just 30 years ago. Artificial intelligence, drones, robots, autonomous vehicles, and 3D printers can be purchased and used by the majority of the population without waiting for permission from governments, the military, or large corporations.

3D printers are one of those technological tools that are quickly and easily making their way through the population. An expansion that takes place largely thanks to increasingly affordable prices and 3D Printing Courses offered by specialized pages such as 3D printers.com, with expert teachers who sell i3d Academy certificates.

    What is a 3D printer?

This innovative technological tool is nothing more than a machine that allows the creation of the most varied objects on a physical, tangible scale . These parts are pre-designed on a computer that will send the manufacturing order to the printer to make the design in detail.

These devices are capable of printing in a three-dimensional space from toys to human prostheses, models of buildings, decorative objects, cases for mobile phones, and even entire houses. There seem to be no limits to the capabilities of a 3D printer.

The most common ones, those that are spreading rapidly through homes, are by no means large appliances, take up little space and consume few energy resources . It is possible to have them in any corner of the house and give them the most creative uses imaginable.

To make them work it is essential to use any of the software available for it. The most popular software for 3D printers are Slic3r, Cura or Netfabb. Each one will be designed to meet specific needs and complexities.

With these programs it is possible to build an object from the accumulation of a certain number of layers of melted material on a platform in a sequential way , which is what it is about.

The operation of a 3D printer

It is not complicated, but it is not overly straightforward or simple to operate a 3D printer to obtain good results. You have to study and practice to define more precisely the objects you want to produce .

The first step is the creation of the digital file . It is the model to be printed designed inside a computer using digital techniques. This file is essential, without it it will be impossible for the machine to give volume and body to the desired object.

To create the previously digitized figure, these printers work using extrusion technology . Extrusion is using a melted substance, usually resin or plastic, so that the object is built layer by layer.

As already indicated, the manufacturing process of these devices to create physical objects has its origin in a digital design, that is , it is additive . This is one of its main qualities, which gives it the power to create very complex pieces that are difficult to achieve with other manufacturing systems.

Brief historical review of 3D printers

Machines dedicated to 3-dimensional printing are not recent inventions. Its origin took place in 1976 , when the first inkjet printer appeared . From that moment on, the possibility of replacing the ink with other types of more solid materials would be investigated. In 1984 was when the first real steps were taken to achieve this adaptation, thanks to the technological advances of the moment.

It is worth asking, therefore, who invented it , who is credited with the conception of such an extraordinary machine. Well, the first application that was carried out to patent it was made in Japan in 1981 by Dr. Hideo Kodama , although the project did not come to fruition, since the Municipal Institute of Industrial Research in Nagoya for which he worked ran out of funds. Although this inventor scientist came to create two additive manufacturing methods that would work with photo-sensitive resin.

Others also tried it in the 1980s, in this case from a team of French engineers (Alain Le Méhauté, Olivier de Witte and Jean-Claude André). In the same way, the project was abandoned when the project ran out of funds, in this case because they did not find possible areas of application.

Finally it was Charles Hull in 1984 who would become co-founder of the prestigious 3D Systems company, which would invent what is known as stereolithography, which would later evolve to the current 3D printer .

This first machine already allowed the creation of a three-dimensional object from digital data from a computer. In these beginnings it was used to create model designs, models so that users could get an idea and even test the creation before going to the production of the final model and accessing their investment.
