  • We‘ll not sacrifice merit, orderliness for political exigency – Makinde

…pledges continuous recognition of civil servants’ contributions to State’s devt.

…says merit award will boost morale of Civil/Public Servants.

Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, on Thursday, said that his administration will never sacrifice merit and orderliness for political exigencies in the State.

The Governor, who was speaking at the State’s 2020 Productivity and Merit Award ceremony held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, stated that his administration will continue to recognize the contributions of Civil/Public Servants to the development of Oyo State.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, quoted the Governor as saying that anyone who has worked hard deserved his rewards.

He said: “Looking round this hall today and seeing those that have just taken their productivity and merit awards, as I was handing over their plaque and token to them, I saw the bright smiles on their faces. And this reminds me of how people who have worked deserve to be rewarded.”

According to him, the annual merit award programme is one of the many ways that his administration is using to boost the morale of civil and public servants to enable them to become high performers.

“Yes, we all know the reputation that the civil servants have in the country. Some people even say that all lazy people come to the Civil/Public Service because they don’t have to do any work. But here in Oyo State, we are surely changing that narrative,” the Governor added.

Governor Makinde revealed that when he came into office, he saw some anomalies, which he said should not be allowed to continue.

“When I came in, the HOS and most people at the top positions in Government are not aware of this story, but I asked for the list of cabinet members from around 2015 till when we came in and I found that there were anomalies and I asked myself if this could have been done by the civil servants or politicians.

“What I discovered was that there was a Head of Service with no record in the cabinet office that she was HOS because she was appointed as a level 10 officer to head the entire workforce. And I said to myself; is this something done by civil servants or politicians and I concluded that it was done by the political leadership at that time.

“And I said to myself that never again must we sacrifice merit and orderliness for political exigency. And those that did it should be listening to me because our people are going to shine their eyes and they would never give them that opportunity to mess the State up again.”

He also stated his belief that people are always ready to put in their best when they have the right to incentives, adding that since his Government was providing the right incentives, workers should freely put in their best.

“When we came in, this administration paid the salary of workers in May 2019. It would have been paid in the first week of June 2019 and we said we would pick a date to always pay the workers’ salary and they said no, because they thought we could not sustain it. Well, this is over two years and I can tell you that the system we have set up does not need me to trigger the payment of salary on the 25th of every month.

“Well, we are in August and, in another two or three weeks, we will enter the ‘ember’ months. I can tell you that, in December, you will still get your 13th month salary. By the grace of God, this is how it will continue until we complete our tenure in office.

“We changed the buses for the workers and opened the staff clinic in the secretariat. We have taken these actions to show how much we care about your well-being,” he said.

He also disclosed that the recent staff verification exercise was not meant to witch-hunt workers but rather meant to clear the reputation of the workforce and make their service more efficient.

While speaking at the event, the Head of Service, Mrs. Ololade Agboola, described Governor Makinde as a Governor who is passionate about workers’ welfare, adding that he has a fantastic and harmonious relationship with civil servants and pensioners in the State.

She said: “Without a doubt, the concept of celebrating public officials was obviously informed by the conviction of the Government that such officials have enriched the policy formulation/development of service, quality of public service delivery and overall governance in the State.

“You will all recall that the Merit Award Programme used to be celebrated with the Inter-Faith Prayer Programme, as no specific date was set aside for the recognition of Public Officials. His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, however, made a vow during the 2019 Merit Award Programme that it would be celebrated on a different and special day set aside specifically to honour the Civil/Public Servants.

“We had the first edition last year where over 40 extraordinary Civil/Public Servants who distinguished themselves in the year 2019 were recognized, celebrated and given both cash and prize awards. Today being the 2nd edition of the award programme, sixty-two (62) excellent workers have been carefully chosen by the Committee set up for the screening exercise.”

The Head of Service admonished all awardees to remain good ambassadors of the State’s Civil/Public Service, saying that the awards should motivate them to prepare for greater and tougher challenges in their career.

She equally enjoined Civil and Public Servants to reciprocate the kind gesture of Governor Makinde by putting in their best in the service of the State.

“However, I wish to admonish you also to put in your best to distinguish yourselves. All hands must be on deck to assist the Government in blocking loopholes in revenue collection and effective service delivery,” she said.

  • Afghanistan: Facebook ban Taliban – related content

Facebook has confirmed it will continue to ban Taliban content from its platforms as it considers the group to be a terrorist organisation.

The company says it has a dedicated team of Afghan experts to monitor and remove content linked to the group.
For years, the Taliban has used social media to spread its messages.

Its rapid takeover of Afghanistan raises fresh challenges for technology firms on how to deal with content related to the group.

“The Taliban is sanctioned as a terrorist organization under US law and we have banned them from our services under our Dangerous Organisation policies. This means we remove accounts maintained by or on behalf of the Taliban and prohibit praise, support, and representation of them,” a Facebook spokesperson told the BBC.
Facebook has defined the Taliban as a dangerous organisation for many years.

Facebook said: “We also have a dedicated team of Afghanistan experts, who are native Dari and Pashto speakers and have knowledge of local context, helping to identify and alert us to emerging issues on the platform.”

The social media giant said it does not make decisions about the recognition of national governments but instead follows the “authority of the international community”.

Facebook highlighted that the policy applies to all of its platforms including its flagship social media network, Instagram and WhatsApp.

However, there are reports that the Taliban is using WhatsApp to communicate.

Facebook told the BBC that it would take action if it found accounts on the app to be linked to the group.
Rival social media platforms have also come under scrutiny over how they handle Taliban-related content.

Spokesmen have used Twitter to update their hundreds of thousands of followers, as the organisation retook control of Afghanistan.

In response to BBC questions about the Taliban’s use of Twitter, a company spokesperson highlighted policies against violent organisations and hateful conduct.

According to its rules, Twitter does not allow groups that promote terrorism or violence against civilians.
Alphabet’s YouTube did not immediately respond to a BBC request for comment on its policies in respect to the Taliban.

  • Fans pressure some actors into fake life, extravagance – Adebimpe Oyebade

Adebimpe Oyebade in an interview has said that some actors live fake life on social media because of pressure from the society. She said people see actors on screen and automatically assume they are rich. Adebimpe Oyebade said she is not trying to make excuses for such actors but she feels that the reasons the actors live fake life is because of pressure from fans and society generally.

She said “Well, I don’t want to make excuses for them. But I would just say one or two things. I feel like the reason most of these actors live this fake life is because of pressure; pressure from the society like from fans, from people. Just from the environment.”

“So because let’s take for example, if you have a face, you have a name, you are popular on Instagram, at the market, everywhere you are popular and you don’t have a car and you want to go out. You feel like ‘oh I want to be presentable to my fans maybe you have a Meet and Greet’, they will now start borrowing cars, doing this and that. And the truth is the fans, I wouldn’t blame them.”

“They feel like once they start seeing you in movie, or you are a popular face then you should be superhuman.”

“Even when they see you wear some kind of hair they are like ‘oh how can you a whole you be wearing this thing’ when they don’t even know how much you have in your account. A lot of people do not know how to handle that. That’s why they do a lot of things to live all sorts of lives, especially the females. Because you want to look good on Instagram, you want to pose for the glam.”

  • Producers make illicit movies because thats what people want – Actress Rose Odika

Actress Rose Odika has blamed the production and availability of illicit and exposive movies on viewers saying that is what the people want. She said if producers make movies deemed moral enough, people won’t buy it and the producers will be at loss.

Rose Odika who is currently the pioneer governor of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) in Oyo State, while speaking with BBC Yoruba said: “Assuming am in a group, for instance, take note am a business person, groups is like a school, if you go to university to read theatre art, they won’t tell you how to make money with it, they will only tell you the redolent of the profession they won’t teach you how to make money.”

“A group is a professional body, If I join the group, their constitution won’t tell you not to produce movies that expose the body, because they won’t feed you, am there as an investor, am there as a professional producer, you own your money, not the TAMPAN, I want to produce a movie with 10 million Naira and i want to make sales, then I study the market and notice what will sell my market is for someone to expose her body, I will have to do that because I want to realize my money back.”

“So it is the society that determines the kind of movie we will produce. Also, the censor board also has work to do, after producing a movie, the censor board has the power to remove one or two scenes in the movie.”

She also mentioned that actresses exposing their body these days get fame compared to previous times when such acts were frowned upon.
