US state department asks Americans living in Russia to leave immediately

In the wake of tensions with Ukraine, the US State Department has advised Americans living in Russia to leave immediately.

“US citizens should consider fleeing Russia quickly via commercial methods currently accessible,” according to a security notice released on the website of the US Embassy in Moscow on February 27.

“A preparedness plan that does not rely on US government aid” was requested of American individuals. “Potential harassment of US citizens by Russian government security officials,” the State Department added.

President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said on Sunday that the European Union is also closing its airspace to Russia.

A string of European countries, including Germany, France and Italy, had already closed their airspace to Russian airlines and aircraft.

The EU also announced over the weekend that it would fund arms supplies to Ukraine and ban pro-Kremlin media

. It also said it would supply combat jets to the Ukrainian armed forces.
