Watch: ‘My dad died on the morning of my first Soweto derby’ – former Orlando Pirates star

Former Orlando Pirates star Brighton Mhlongo has revealed a rather heartbreaking story about his late father.

ORLANDO PIRATES STARS’ FATHER DIES BEFORE THE SOWETO DERBY

The 31-year-old Mhlongo, who was forced to retire due to an eye injury, revealed the poignant story while chatting on Talk TV.

The Orlando Pirates development product said his dad, a Kaizer Chiefs fan, was hospitalised ahead of the match, and without major health alarm.

Unbeknown to Mhlongo, his dad died hours before the match. The team received the news but knew better to keep the news a secret until after the game.

“I made the team for the Soweto derby and he became alive,” Mhlongo said.

“When I left him at the hospital he was alive!”

“He was excited about it and he was a Chiefs fan. He was like ‘I am a Pirates fan because of 1,2,3.”

STUART BAXTER REVEALS HIS NUMBER ONE KEEPER BEFORE THE DERBY

In somewhat related news, Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has assured Amakhosi fans who his current first-choice goalkeeper is.

As we’ve seen in the past three seasons, Itumeleng Khune is no longer Amakhosi’s number one goalkeeper, it’s obviously tough to take for Khune’s biggest fans.

While the likes of Daniel Akpeyi and Bruce Bvuma have stepped up in the past three seasons, the Ajax Cape Town academy product Brandon Petersen has truly arrived this season.

So, who is Baxter sticking with in goal at this moment and in the near future?

“The goalkeeper situation has not changed. The goalkeeper situation is that we’re very lucky that we have four goalkeepers who are competing very hard,” Baxter said as per iDiskiTimes.
