Who does Rex Murphy marry? Rex Murphy is a pundit and author from Canada who was married to Jennifer Davis, also known as Jennifer Guy. Prior to September 2015, Murphy was the regular host of CBC Radio One’s Cross Country Checkup, a nationwide call-in show, for 21 years. He currently contributes to the National Post and maintains the YouTube channel RexTV.
Murphy is the second of five children of Harry Murphy (father) and Marie Murphy. He grew up in Placentia, 105 kilometers west of St. John’s (mother). 1968 saw his graduation from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a bachelor’s degree in English. After a year of law studies at St Edmund Hall, he began but did not complete a Master’s degree in English at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes scholar.
Rex Murphy first gained national notoriety while attending Memorial University in Lennoxville, Quebec, where his speech was widely covered by the media. Murphy criticized the leadership style of Newfoundland’s premier, Joey Smallwood, as autocratic and called his legislature’s recent announcement of free tuition a fraud. Smallwood cautioned the undergraduate student not to return during a news conference. Murphy did so and was elected President of the Student Council at Memorial University. The administration of Smallwood fulfilled its promise, providing students with free tuition and an additional $50 living allowance.
Murphy has twice stood for provincial office in Newfoundland: in the 1985 provincial election in the Placentia constituency and in a 1986 by-election in the St. John’s East riding as a Liberal. He was defeated twice. In the 1980s, he also served as executive assistant to Clyde Wells. Murphy appeared frequently on a variety of CBC programming. He had regular “Point of View” commentary segments on The National, CBC Television’s flagship evening newscast.
He was also the regular host of the nationwide call-in program Cross Country Checkup on CBC Radio One. In 2004, he and nine other renowned Canadians engaged in the production and defense of a Great Canadian on The Greatest Canadian, a CBC television program. As an advocate for former Canadian prime minister Pierre Trudeau, Murphy led his candidate to a third-place finish in the final ballot.
Murphy withdrew from Cross Country Checkup on September 20, 2015, and continues to provide comments on The National through June 28, 2017. After receiving multiple complaints from the public in 2014, the CBC’s ombudsman investigated charges that Murphy may have had a conflict of interest by disparaging opponents of the Alberta oil sands in his Point of view segments while getting payment from the oil sector for paid speeches.
In the final report and following an investigation, the CBC’s ombudsman, Esther Enkin, did not state whether Murphy’s speeches constituted a conflict of interest, but she did conclude that “since taking money creates the perception of a conflict of interest, CBC management should consider, in the review they are conducting, whether it is appropriate for CBC news and current affairs staff to receive payment for speaking engagements, even with disclosure.”
